2B – Daily News – Wednesday, August 4, 2010 WORK Continued from page 1B emblematic of Heyward- Bey’s season it came late in the ninth game of the season at home against Kansas City. With Oak- land driving for the poten- tial winning score in the final minute, a pass from Bruce Gradkowski hit Heyward-Bey in the hands, bounced off the receiver’s knees and fell into Mike Brown’s hands for a game-sealing inter- ception in the Chiefs’ 16- 10 win. ‘‘I’m not thinking about last year,’’ Heyward-Bey said. ‘‘I’m thinking about the next play, thinking about making plays. That’s all I’m thinking about.’’ Heyward-Bey put in extra work in the offsea- son. He put on about 10 to FAVRE Continued from page 1B son transforms or gets better.’’ Star running back Adrian Peterson said he still hopes that Favre will be handing him the ball in the season opener on Sept. 9 in New Orleans. Peterson said he exchanged text messages with Favre on Tuesday but declined to give details. ‘‘I’m still up in the air like you guys trying to figure out what’s going to happen,’’ Peterson said. ‘‘I’m sure he’ll make the best decision for him.’’ This uncertainty is nothing new for the Vikings, who have spent the last three years answering questions about Favre’s future. 15 pounds of muscle in hopes that the added strength will help him break tackles for big plays, put in extra work with the quarterbacks to improve his hands and did what he could to put the disappointing rookie year behind him. While he claims to ignore the criticism, it was almost impossible to escape. ‘‘It hurt him what hap- pened last year,’’ Aso- mugha said. ‘‘Naturally he didn’t feel good about the things that were said, whatever. It’s not like it was a secret. He knew that he didn’t play well. That hurt him. This year it looks like he’s had a dif- ferent purpose. He’s going out and doing well.’’ Asomugha had a simi- lar experience coming into the NFL, although not at quite as high a profile. Like Heyward-Bey, Aso- mugha was considered a reach when the Raiders selected him 31st overall in the 2003 draft. He also struggled early before having a break- through year in 2006 with eight interceptions. He has been to three Pro Bowls since then and signed a three-year, $45.3 million contract before last season that made him the highest- paid defensive back in NFL history. Asomugha said he talked with Heyward-Bey about dealing with those expectations last year but has kept this year’s focus on the positive. That’s where the extra work comes in. ‘‘I told him the first day before we even had prac- tice that after every single practice that we’re going to get some work on the things that he needs to DAVIS Continued from page 1B stretch of six straight los- ing seasons — but that wasn’t enough for Single- tary or his players. ‘‘Vernon is a guy that understands that you have to come out here and just do the best you can. Ver- non loves the game, he’s focused, he’s making the plays he is supposed to work on,’’ Asomugha said. ‘‘Because even when he’s getting the work, I’m get- ting the work and doing extra stuff. So we’ll come aside after practice and I’ll ask him what is it today. He’ll be like, I need work on this, I need work on that. We just go out and do it.’’ The improvement has been obvious in offseason practices and at training camp. Coach Tom Cable said he sees a very differ- ent player from the strug- gling rookie of a year ago, who would let one drop ruin an entire practice. New quarterback Jason Campbell has also been impressed. Campbell said as soon as he joined the team he stressed to Hey- ward-Bey the importance of putting in extra work to improve his hands. Camp- bell likes what he has seen so far. make, and at some point in time, he’ll take that next level,’’ Singletary said. ‘‘But he’s just really hav- ing fun. He really is.’’ If Smith had to guess now, he would predict Davis would at least equal his production from last season and perhaps even top it. ‘‘I don’t see why not,’’ Smith said. ‘‘Obviously, statistics are statistics, but I think he continues to get Scoreboard MLB American League At A Glance All Times EDT By The Associated Press East Division WL Pct GB Tampa Bay 67 39 .632 — New York 66 40 .623 1 Boston 61 46 .5706 1/2 Toronto 56 51 .52311 1/2 Baltimore 33 73 .311 34 Central Division WL Pct GB Chicago 60 46 .566 — Minnesota 59 48 .5511 1/2 Detroit 53 53 .500 7 Kansas City 45 61 .425 15 Cleveland 45 62 .42115 1/2 West Division Texas WL Pct GB 61 44 .581 — Oakland 53 52 .505 8 Los Angeles54 54 .5008 1/2 Seattle 39 67 .36822 1/2 ——— Monday’s Games Toronto 8, N.Y.Yankees 6 Cleveland 6, Boston 5 Tampa Bay 4, Minnesota 2 Oakland 6, Kansas City 0 Tuesday’s Games Chicago White Sox 12, Detroit 2, 1st game Detroit 7, Chicago White Sox 1, 2nd game Baltimore 6, L.A.
