Ted Danson may be the only answer to the trivia question:
Who played the same character in three different series – twice?
And the answer is: As forensics investigator D.B. Russell in
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: NY" and "CSI: Cyber,"
and as ex-ballplayer-turned-barkeep Sam Malone in "Cheers,"
"Frasier" and "The Simpsons."
And it's the latter role of the womanizing, recovering alcoholic
proprietor of the Boston pub "where everyone knows your
name" that put Danson's career on the fast track. Always
behind the bar, Sam was quick with a quip or a greeting and
a liquid refreshment for the bar's regulars. And his on-and-off
relationship and repartee with waitress Diane (Shelley Long) in
the sitcom's early seasons made the series a favorite among critics
and fans alike.
Characters would come and go during the series' 1982-93 run
on NBC but one constant was Sam, a role that earned Danson
11 Emmy nominations and two wins.
Viewers can belly on up to the bar at "Cheers" when it airs
weeknights on Decades and streams on Peacock, Hulu and
Paramount+.
