Spring 2021 Fire Drill Keeps Safety at the Forefront
I

fire alarm while a kitchen fire rages for nine
minutes before firemen show up in your
dorm room to rescue you. That's what happened
at a sorority a few houses away from Theta
Chi recently, where three young women slept
through a real fire alarm.
Theta Chi brothers take fire safety seriously,
so even without that stark example of the need
for vigilance, another drill was conducted by
the Des Moines Fire Department (DMFD)
under the guidance of sophomore Bryan
Schlotterbeck '23 in early April. Bryan, as
the health and safety director for the spring
and fall semesters, arranged details of the drill
with Drake Safety, Midwest Alarm, Midwest
Sprinkler Systems, and the DMFD. He also
ensured a roster of live-in names and room
locations was provided to the lieutenant on
scene and checked that members gathered at the
correct location for a head count.
Many of the participants had never seen the
correct way to use a fire extinguisher, so that
training was especially beneficial during the
exercise.
Also in attendance was OXBC board member
Al Kopec '79.
While the drill was a great learning experience,
we managed to have some fun, too. Tom
Wrigley '21 and Evan Del Carmen '22 had
the honor of pulling the fire alarm; what child
doesn't dream of doing that?
