Third Degree Heats Up Local Club Scene by STEPHANIE CRIDER Local band Third Degree is a regular in the Fayetteville music scene. Up & Coming Weekly recently had a chance to chat with them. UCW: Who are the members and what instru- ments do you play? TD: Tim Williams han- dles lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Alex Thomas plays lead/rhythm guitar and does some of the vocals too. Steve Powell plays rhythm/ lead guitar and acoustic guitar; while Henry Nieves is our drummer; and Daniel Nieves plays bass guitar and vocals. UCW: Give us a brief history lesson on the band. When and where did you get started? TD: The band got together when Tim Williams and Alex Thomas had an idea to start a band. They went to open mic at Big Harry’s Tavern and found Steve Powell. We rehearsed for a couple of months. We went through several drummers and bass players before we found Henry and Daniel Nieves. (father and son respectively) We’ve been playing together about four years now. UCW: How did the band get its name? TD: Third Degree got its name from a suggestion from Tim’s brother-in-law. It was voted on and adopted as our band name. UCW: How would you define your music? TD: We would define our music as an array of rock — from classic to alterna- tive including everything in between. UCW: Who are your favorite bands/influences on your music? TD: Some of our influences are Black Crowes, Led Zepplin, Doobie Brothers and Bad Company. UCW: Do you write your own music and where does that inspiration come from? TD: We are in the process of writing our own music inspired by Styx and Joe Satriani among others. UCW: If you only had two words to describe your band what would they be? TD: Energy and passion. UCW: What are your hopes/goals for the future of your band? TD: Hopes are to keep pleasing people and to expand the show — lights and equipment. Our goals for the band are to record our own music and headline shows. UCW: Where do you see the band five years, 10 years from now? TD: Still rockin’ and headlining big shows UCW: Where can Fayetteville music lovers see you in the near future? TD: You can find Third Degree opening for bands such as Molly Hatchet and Bad Company at The Dog House, playing Big Harry’s Tavern and on occasion at Louie’s Sports Bar and Jester’s Pub.
