NKBA: Now let's talk about some trends. What are the big ones you're seeing right now? ES: Since 2020, with people spending more time at home, there has been an increased interest in bringing the outdoors indoors. In 2021, some ways homeowners accomplished this were with open layouts that make spaces multifunctional, large windows and French doors, integrated indoor-outdoor spaces, and outdoor kitchens. For our kitchen remodel clients, clean styles and materials that used contemporary cabinetry and countertops were popular. Next year, we expect our kitchen design and remodel clients will continue to favor the design choices mentioned above. Two more trends that have taken hold and are likely to gain traction are: 1. Nature-inspired or "Biophilic" design: This is created by incorporating organic materials, colors and textures into the design. Sustainable or reused materials and bioplastics are a great choice for many reasons. Stone, marble and natural wood accompanied by earth-tone paint and houseplants bring nature to us, helping us create soothing spaces we won't grow weary of. For cabinetry, there will be increasing interest in laminate fronts with nature-inspired colors and soft matte textures, such as soft greens, sandy concretes and slate grays. 2. Well-planned multifunctional spaces: Preferably, this should include spaces designed to include smart appliances. Ever since the pandemic began, people have been getting to know their kitchens better, expanding their culinary skills, and so on. So well-appointed kitchens designed with proper planning, organization and storage have become more important to many homeowners. If there's scope to make the space multi-functional, even better; the idea is to create spaces that cater to the needs of all members of your household and that support your lifestyle. Homeowners are also getting creative, making their spaces more entertainment- friendly by adding fun, interesting features such as a home cocktail bar for guests to enjoy. NKBA: What trends would you like to see disappear? ES: In general, we're not fans of trends that look great on Pinterest but are impractical in real life. Two of the biggest examples, in our opinion, are: 1. The all-white kitchen: We understand it, we respect it; it's a classic. But with so many more exciting options to explore – options that can express one's personality and style – we think our clients can do better! Also, all-white kitchens are very challenging to maintain and may be restrictive when you're spending more time at home, including in the kitchen, possibly cooking together with family members (some of whom, let's face it, may not be as particular or meticulous as you are when it comes to maintenance). Instead of white, crisp blues and deep greens can give you that clean, refreshing look without the constant fear of stains. 2. Open shelving: If it's included strategically, open shelving can look attractive and interesting. But unless you're using them strictly for décor, they're simply not practical. You'll have to ensure your dishes, cookware and glasses are always perfectly organized. Chances are, you'll find yourself dreaming of doors in no time. RO By the NKBA Staff
