The fire south of Corning was caused by illegal fireworks and the fire southwest of Red Bluff was caused by the improper use of legal fireworks, according to the release. Cal Fire information officer Kevin Colburn said the fire southwest of Red Bluff was ignited after sparks from fireworks launched near a roadway landed in a grassy area. The Cal Fire Tehama-Glenn unit and Tehama County Fire Department responded to the fires. Colburn said firefighters spent the holiday patrolling and educating people about general fire safety tips and See FIRES, page 7A Teen thrown from pickup, badly hurt Daily News photo by Rich Greene A vegetation fire burned at River Park Thursday night, started by improper use of legal fireworks. By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer High winds canceled Tehama County's Fourth of July fireworks show Thursday night, putting on hold for now the return of a local pyrotechnics show. The Tehama County Fireworks Committee, which raised money for a year to pay for the return of the holiday celebration, is scheduled to hold a public meeting 6 p.m. July 17 at Lariat Bowl to discuss a potential makeup date or holding on to the funds for a larger show in 2014. The group is still figuring out what expenses it will occur from canceling the show. The pyrotechnics have been taken down and were on their way to back to Sacramento Friday. "We want public input, we want the community's ideas and suggestions," committee member DJ Gordy said. Two fireworks were sent up as test shots from the launch site at the Elks Lodge, the second of which showed the north winds, as high as 28 mph at times, were making the conditions unsafe for a show. "The wind was suppressing the fireworks so they weren't getting up in the air but the big concern was the debris was being pushed back down on the pyrotechnics," Gordy said. Officials finally canceled the show at 10:30 p.m. "The community fireworks committee had provided all recommended measures for safety at the launch site, but could not anticipate the unpredictable weather condiSee WIND, page 7A A 19-year-old Palo Cedro man suffered major injuries after being ejected from the bed of a pickup truck that struck a tree off Highway 36 east of Manton Road Friday morning. Shane Voorhees was sleeping in the bed of the westbound Nissan pickup when the driver, Dannie Obar, 22, of Anderson, also fell asleep, said Shaun Hoover from the Red Bluff office of the California High Patrol. The truck drifted off the roadway and crashed into a rock, ejecting Voorhees, Hoover said. The pickup then struck a large tree and sustained major front-end damage about 7:50 a.m. Voorhees was airlifted to Shasta Regional Medical Center for head trauma. Voorhees was in fair condition about 3:45 p.m. Friday at Mercy Medical Center, a nursing supervisor there said. Obar and another passenger, Shane Dorrell, 22, of Anderson were transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital for moderate injuries. -Andre Byik Lawmakers Bushnell gears up for national rodeo approve 4.5 percent Bushnell, state worker raises RedChelsey High Schoola Bluff By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer SACRAMENTO (AP) — Rebounding state revenue bolstered by temporary tax increases recently approved by voters are paying off for California's largest public employees' union. The state Senate this week, following earlier approval in the Assembly, ratified a three-year agreement that gives the 95,000 members of Service Employees International Union Local 1000 4.5 percent pay raises by July 1, 2015. The agreement was negotiated between the union and Gov. Jerry Brown's administration. The union supported Brown's successful drive last fall for a ballot initia- tive temporarily raising the statewide sales tax and income taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year. The tax increases are expected to generate about $6 billion more per year. Democrats used their two-thirds supermajority in the Senate on Wednesday to approve AB1377 on a 27-8 vote, sending the bill containing the agreement to the Democratic governor for his signature. They acted days after SEIU 1000 gave Brown's 2014 re-election campaign committee $54,400. ''We don't really have any comment on that specific contribution,'' union spokesman Jim Zamora said. ''But it is worth noting that SEIU Local 1000 worked very hard in 2010 to elect Jerry Brown and to defeat (Republican) Meg Whitman.
