Alpha Nu Chapter of Beta eta Pi University of Kansas P.O. Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested Alpha Nu's Letter MEMORY AND OUR MYSTIC SHRINE Stanley Nelson PC '44 entered the Mystic Shrine on May 31. After spending a year as an undergraduate at KU, Stan joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He spent three years in the Pacific fighting in WWII. After the war ended, he went back to KU, finished his undergraduate degree, and graduated from KU's law school. Richard Arnspiger '51 entered the Mystic Shrine on August 24. He notably won a high school state basketball championship with teammate Jerry Waugh '51, served in the Third Army under General Patton, and shares his Beta legacy with his son and grandson. Kirk Ray Hagan '63 entered the Mystic Shine on February 21. Kirk was recruited by the University of Kansas Track Team out of high school and went on to excel in both academics and running, accruing many awards in both, including the USA record in 1961 for the 2-mile relay. Upon graduation in 1963, he joined the U.S. Army and returned from Vietnam in 1965. His career after attending graduate school took him from managing a bank to a family trucking business to being CFO of a corporate freightliner operation. Before retiring, Kirk also helped the Oklahoma City Food Back grow regionally. His marriage of 56 years to Kendall Waggoner, which was full of travel and adventure, included three children and seven grandchildren who he dearly loved and was extremely proud of. Stephen Lane '75 entered the Mystic Shrine on August 28. An excellent high school quarter-miler, Steve turned his strong discipline to his studies, graduating with the highest GPA of all KU engineers. Obtaining his civil engineering license, he joined the family firm, Shockey-Lane Inc. He rose to the position of president and led the firm to decades of success. He leaves his beautiful Crista, also a KU grad who he wed in Danforth Chapel, along with two sons and two lovely granddaughters. Steve was fiery but friendly—noble in ideals, but humble in manner. The second of pledge class of 1975 to 'march ever onward,' we weep in his passing yet are warmed by memory of his great, kind heart. ALUMNI NEWS Robert F.
