Juan Martin del Potro only took five points to get the fans buzzing at Wimbledon. Two victories in two very different matches Wednesday sent Murray and del Potro onto the semifinals at the All England Club. Murray completed his seventh career comeback from two sets down to top Fernando Verdasco, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5. ''Made some bad mistakes, poor choices on the court,'' Murray said. ''And then, I turned it around really well after that.'' Earlier on Centre Court, del Potro hyperextended his left knee and crumpled to the ground on the fifth point, but shook off the injury for a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over No. 4 David Ferrer. ''To be honest, I didn't want to retire (being) in the quarters for first time at Wimbledon,'' del Potro said. ''And that's the reason for continuing play. The doctors gave me good anti-inflammatories.'' Del Potro's next match is Friday against No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who took down No. 7 Tomas Berdych 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-3 on Court 1. Murray will play No. 24 Jerzy Janowicz, a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Lukasz Kubot in the first Grand Slam meeting between two Polish men. Red Bluff falls in section opener By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer Fresh off a District 1 title win on Sunday, the Red Bluff major girls All-Stars softball team faced a quick turnaround to its first game in the Capital Section Tournament. Red Bluff fell to District 47 winner Chico, 3-1 in a facepaced game Wednesday at Hobart Field, where scoring opportunities were scarce. Red Bluff took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Megan Thompson reached base on an infield hit and was driven in by Aubrey Zamora. Chico quashed Red Bluff's attempt to go up 2-0 on the play by catching a runner at home. Chico made its move in the bottom of the second inning, which saw Savannah Auer bring in Reina Montoya to tie the game at 1 apiece. Chico, wearing red and black, took a 2-1 lead in the inning off a wild pitch that led to Maggie Smith crossing home plate. Coral Rutland would give Chico a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after taking advantage of a Red Bluff misstep. Chico's narrow lead would hold as Red Bluff enjoyed just two more base runners in the game. Chico's Trinity Maxey pitched five innings in the win. Red Bluff falls to the elimination bracket and next plays at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hobart Field. ——— Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com. In a game that was rescheduled and relocated from a 5:30 p.m. start at Volonte Park in Anderson to a 7:30 night game at Bizz Johnson Little League Fields in Shasta Lake because of triple-digit temperatures, Red Bluff went on a scoring binge to eliminate Foothill, 16-2. Red Bluff's run total marks the third straight game the squad registered 15 runs or more in a win after it fell to East Redding in the opening round. The boys in blue defeated Shasta Dam by a score of 23-13 on Saturday and downed Cottonwood 15-2 on Monday. But for all the offensive output the All-Stars team has enjoyed, which included a bona fide bomb of a home run by Will Nelson that shot into the trees past left field Tuesday, Red Bluff coach Dennis Morrison knows defense will be the key to negotiating through the elimination bracket. "Well, the boys are starting to come together," Morrison said. "Things are going pretty well. We're trying to fine-tune our defense and find our way that way, but offensively the kids are hitting the ball well." One loss away from a summer vacation, Red Bluff jumped on Foothill early as a 1-0 lead after the first inning turned into a 30 lead in the second courtesy of runs batted in by Nelson, Tristan Hobart and Matteo Zepeda. Foothill countered in the bottom the frame as Tyler Muszanowski batted in Beau Boudro to cut Red Bluff's lead to 3-1. It was the closest Foothill would get on the night as Red Bluff staged a five-run third inning, which was highlighted by RBIs from Sevee Johnson, Tye Clement, Hobart and Nel- Daily News photo by Andre Byik Red Bluff's Braden Hutchens puts down a bunt against Foothill on Tuesday in Shasta Lake. "I coached (Nelson) during the regular season. He's kind of famous in Red Bluff for that," Morrison said. "Big, strong power hitter. What can I say about the kid? He did it all year for me in the regular season. And I tell you, he's worked really hard for three years and this is the first year he's been an AllStar. Probably should have been the last couple years, but he's come out and shown everybody why he should be here." Nelson said it was the first home run he's hit at the park and the first home run he's hit as an All-Star. "I was pretty happy about it," he said. Foothill's Adam Stevens drove in Jayden Gordon with a single to left field in the bottom of the third to cut the team's deficit to 8-2, but that's all the scoring the team would muster against Red Bluff's pitching quartet of Fabian Chavez, Cole Morrison, Trenton Coates and Johnson. Red Bluff took a 10-2 lead to the fifth inning, when it notched six more runs on the scoreboard by way of consecutive homers by Mario Martinez and Chavez, and an RBI from Johnson, who scored Coates. Martinez has gone yard in three straight games, and Tuesday's was a three-run knock. The game was called after five innings. So how will Morrison and the All-Stars hope to capture and continue their hot hitting as they move forward in the tournament? No superstitions there. "If you ask me what our pre-game ritual is, we try to come out and work hard," he said. "Give thanks to the guy above for letting us be here." The Red Bluff major boys played an 8 p.m. game Wednesday in Anderson that went past deadline.
