6A Daily News – Thursday, July 4, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Peterson named Artist of the Month Barbara Peterson, former social secretary for Red Bluff Art Association is July Artist of the Month. President Kathy Brehm states: "Barbara is a very special person and wonderful artist. We are so happy she is a RBAA member." Barbara doesn't consider herself a professional artist, but really enjoys art for the pleasure it gives her, especially when combined with her other passions—gardening and needlework projects. She uses a sketchbook to record trips fishing with her husband Pete. She has also sketched scenes from their journeys to Michigan, the Panama Canal, and most recently, Mexico. She likes color pencil and watercolors because they are easily transportable. Barbara's interest in gardening led her some years ago to study and research the meanings given to flowers. From this she has created a number of greeting cards for different occasions. Members look forward to receiving a birthday greeting from Barbara's collection that includes a painting of the flower designated for a particular month along with history and information about that particular flower. Barbara did have an interest in art from an early age. She admired an aunt and uncle who were artists and also loved decorating for school and special events. Her goal for this year is to complete some of the paintings she has in progress. Being part of RBAA has encouraged her to try new techniques. She says that the Thursday afternoon drawing classes are such a valuable way to keep and improve skills. Also, it is very gratifying to her when family ask to hang one of her works in their homes. Barbara is enjoying being retired after a long career in nursing where she fulfilled many roles.
