What can we say or do to bring comfort to a grief-stricken soul? If you have ever suffered loss, you understand that sometimes people try their best to say the right thing. Even the best thought out words can seem so meaningless and empty when weighed against the emotional numbness of bereavement. The Bible tells us that real love is found not in what we say, but in what we do (1 John 3:18). As we seek to bring comfort to those who are hurting, we must pray for a way to show love to a sorrowful heart. We should desire to be a conduit of God's love to those who desperately need it. We also must understand that love can be manifested in many ways. Love can be expressed by taking care of the lawn, putting gas in the car, providing childcare, cleaning the house or by numerous other actions. In whatever way you are led to show love to a grieving person let it be as non-obtrusive as possible. It may be as simple as sharing your love by dropping off a bucket of chicken with all the fi xings. In bearing their burdens, you are helping them realize that they are remembered and not alone in their journey of grief.
