The way things have been this fortnight, that's actually quite an accomplishment. Rafael Nadal, a 12time Grand Slam champion, was beaten in the first round. Roger Federer, owner of a record 17 major titles, went out in the second round, as did four-time major champ Maria Sharapova. Fivetime Wimbledon winner Serena Williams' 34match winning streak ended in the fourth round. And on and on it's gone, with no top-20 player other than Murray left on his side of the draw, and a record-equaling number of withdrawals or mid-match retirements because of health problems. Djokovic faces No. 7 Tomas Berdych today. Murray plays 54th-ranked Fernando Verdasco. Less drama and more finesse did the trick for Sabine Lisicki, who backed up her victory over Serena Williams by topping Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to advance to her second career Wimbledon semifinal. The 23rd-seeded Lisicki, who matched Williams' power in her stunning victory Monday over the world's No. 1 player, came back less than 24 hours later and hit six drop shots for winners in dissecting the 46thranked Kanepi. Tritons earn 4th in opening meet Special to the DN The Red Bluff Tritons swim team took 23 athletes to compete in its first swim meet of the season last weekend hosted by the Scott Valley Sharks in Etna and placed fourth overall despite fielding fewer swimmers than other competitors. The Tritons worked hard and were able to earn 420 points overall and captured seven high-point awards. The swimmers ranged in ages from 6 to 17. The Tritons had competitive relay teams in the girls 11-12 age group and the girls 13-18 age groups. The girls 11-12 team of Kaylee Humphrey, Rylie Vise, Jasmine Atencio and Carissa Twitchell took second place in both their Medley and Freestyle relays. The girls 13-18 team of Samara Robinson, Erika Downey, Caitlyn Igarta, and Sosanna O'Sullivan swam strong and earned third place both days. The high point awards were earned by Joslyn Shults (first place in the girls 6 and under), Micah Jackson (third place boys 8 and under), Niko Munoz (third place boys 9-10), Jasmine Atencio (second place girls 11-12), Samara Robinson (second place girls 15-16), and in the boys 17-18 Tritons teammates Curtis Twitchell and Josh Jackson placed second and third. Micah Jackson said he loved the butterfly event and swam his IM without getting disqualifying. Olivia Fry took 13 seconds off her 50-meter butterfly and did it without a DQ for the first time. Luke Downey placed eighth in his 100-meter breaststroke and said, "I went from 2:28 to 1:56 and that was my fastest time ever." Rylie Vise improved all her times; she took three seconds off her 50-meter fly and nine seconds off her 100-meter breaststroke. Jaden Humphrey took more than a minute off his 100-meter breaststroke, setting himself a new PR. Kaylee Humphrey improved her 50-meter butterfly and placed eighth on her 100-meter breaststroke. Jasmine Atencio said she was pleased that she "took three seconds off the 50 fly and finished first in that event." Erika Downey swam best on her 100-meter butterfly, earning fifth place and also got a "B" time on her 50-meter freestyle. Caitlyn Igarta took 14 seconds off her 100-meter backstroke and placed eighth. Josh Jackson had "B" and "BB" times for everything and earned third place in all his events. Jordan Munoz and Sosanna O'sullivan both earned fifth place in the 200meter breaststroke for their age group. Jace Shults was able to take an entire minute off his 100-meter IM, finishing second. Curtis Twitchell held his "A" time for the 50meter freestyle at 26.10. Mikaela Weber placed sec- ond in the 13-14 girls 100meter fly. Some may say sports are about winning and losing but the Tritons just want to have fun and support each other. One of the youngest swimmers, Bella Munoz summed it all up. When asked what she liked best about the meet she said, "I thought it was really cool when I was right next to the heat winner of my race." The Red Bluff Tritons host its home meet July 1214 at the Red Bluff High School pool. SWIMMING Manta Rays put in sizzling performance Special to the DN Corning Manta Rays battled the extreme heat this past weekend at the Durham Dolphins Invitational. Temperatures soared over 110, however, they didn't detour the Corning Manta Rays from having some really great races. "Almost every swimmer on our team posted their Best Ever Times," coach Julene Stokes said. "Many swimmers swam in events that they had never swam before. We were impressed with their efforts."
