12 | r e d f c u.o r g e 1960s were filled with significant events in space travel. St. John Courtenay, Jr. contributed to those milestones through his work with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, including working on the lunar roving module and the Hubble telescope. When Courtenay, an engineer, needed help with his finances, however, he turned to Redstone Federal Credit Union. He joined Redstone in 1960 and has been a part of the family since then. He's proud of that membership. "I tell people, 'Please don't talk to me about banks.' During the financial crisis, I saw five banks go broke. I have never had any problems with Redstone. I have checking, savings, and investment accounts at Redstone," he said, and he has never closed his accounts. Redstone experienced major advancements over the first decade of Courtenay's membership. It opened branches in Mannheim and Stuttgart, Germany, to serve the military and Department of Defense members. It installed the first online computer system of any federal credit union in the nation. Redstone's membership grew to 50,357 during that time. is November 28, 2021, Redstone will celebrate its 70th Anniversary and its more than 630,000 members. Courtenay, 93, hopes to join in the celebration. After retiring from NASA, St. John and his wife, Carolyn, relocated from Huntsville to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 2016 to be near their daughter. He was thrilled when a Redstone branch opened nearby at 2404 Medical Center Parkway. He can see it from his front porch. "Everyone at the branch knows Mr. Courtenay and always enjoys his visits," said Mike Panesi, Redstone's Vice President of the Tennessee Market. "He is a longtime Redstone family member who often shares his wisdom and laughter with us." Courtenay's daughter, Anne Davis, says he remains active.
