Official Kids Mag visited a
magical place in Fayetteville this
summer where some kids went
on a different kind of treasure
hunt. Some of it was buried
treasure, some was hidden behind
leaves, some was right out in the open.
It was colorful. It was crunchy. It was
delicious! The treasure was discovered
in the gardens at Apple Seeds
Teaching Farm in Fayetteville.
It was all part of a cool program
at Apple Seeds called "Farm
to Table," where kids like you
harvested vegetables right out of the
garden, washed them, prepared them
and cooked and ate a meal made from
them.
This group of 7-12 year olds learned
how to pull carrot treasures out of
the ground. They practiced plucking
cucumbers and green pepper treasures from
the vines and branches.
They were surprised to see that not all
vegetables look perfect like they do in the
grocery store. "This carrot looks like a
monster!" "This cucumber is prickly!" "This
green pepper has a funny face!"
Then the cooking fun began!
They grated.
They chopped.
They measured.
They mixed.
They created a yummy meal of cucumber
sushi and carrot cupcakes, and then gobbled
it up! (See the recipes on page 28!)
Best of all, these kids learned all about
what "farm to table" means. They thought
about where their food comes from and all
that goes into growing, preparing and making
a meal. Plus, they had a lot of fun along the
way!
"When kids have the opportunity to
see where food comes from, take an active
role in harvesting and preparing it, their
enthusiasm for choosing and eating fresh,
nutritious foods goes way up," says Apple
Seeds Marketing Director Tanya Collins. "Our
Teaching Farm is the place where kids begin
a life-long love for good for them foods and
learn cooking skills to enable them to feel
empowered."
Apple Seeds Teaching Farm is all about
fresh and healthy food. It's about planting a
seed and watch it grow. It's about exploring
new tastes and learning about cooking and
eating yummy things. If you've never been
there (it's in Gulley Park in Fayetteville), ask
your adult to check out their programs and
events or arrange a visit.
