Sanchez pitched a one-hitter for his first shutout since a no-hitter as a rookie in September 2006, and Jorge Cantu played his final game for Flori- da in the Marlins’ 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Sanchez (8-6) retired his first 13 batters and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts, winning for the first time in six starts since a victory at Baltimore on June 22. ‘‘It’s my first complete game of the season,’’ said Sanchez, long plagued by shoulder problems. ‘‘I’m more happy because I’m really healthy. That’s what I worked on in the offsea- son. The other thing is to help the team, because we’re really close. If we do a good job, we can make the playoffs. That’s what we want.’’ The Marlins traded Cantu to AL West-leading Texas in a deal finalized after the game. He was replaced on defense by Wes Helms in the bottom of the eighth. While ready for a new start and a pennant race out West, Cantu had mixed emotions. ‘‘It’s hard to let go sometimes,’’ he said after saying many of his good- byes. ‘‘I bonded with these guys.’’ Mike Stanton hit a pair of RBI doubles, and Ronny Paulino had two sacrifice flies for Florida. Giants rookie Buster Posey had his hitting streak snapped at 21 games, one shy of tying Hall of Famer Willie McCovey’s San Francisco rookie record, set in 1959. Sanchez retired Freddy Sanchez on a liner to left on his 118th pitch, ending his gem in 2 hours, 7 minutes. He struck out eight for the fifth time in his career. It was his third career complete game and second shutout. He pitched the no-hitter on Sept. 6, 2006, against Arizona. He tossed his previous com- plete game on Sept. 16 that year. Juan Uribe reached on Cantu’s throwing error to start the fifth for the Giants’ first runner. Cantu fielded Uribe’s two-hopper but first baseman Gaby Sanchez couldn’t hold onto Cantu’s throw after scooping it. The Red Bluff Spartans varsity foot- ball prospects should attend an important informational meeting at 3:30 p.m. today at the stadium. The meeting is for returning players and those wishing to play. Practice is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9. Rare HRs send Rangers by A’s ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Michael Young scored his first three times up and light-hitting Taylor Teagarden hit a two-run home run, sending the Texas Rangers to a 7-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night. The Rangers won the series against the A’s and closed out a homestand against division rivals by going 5-2. They added 3 1/2 games to their lead in the AL West and head back on the road 8 1/2 games clear of the A’s. Texas opened the day by putting All-Star second base- man Ian Kinsler on the disabled list, calling up rookie Mitch Moreland to perhaps become their left-handed hit- ting first baseman and then traded two pitching prospects to Florida for Jorge Cantu, who is likely to be their right- handed hitting first baseman. Josh Hamilton moved from his usual spot behind Vladimir Guerrero into Kinsler’s No. 3 spot in the lineup, and Nelson Cruz moved up to No. 5. The first two times through the lineup, the Nos. 2 through 5 hitters were 6 for 7 with a walk; the lone out was an RBI groundout by Guer- rero. Posey, who batted .440 with six homers and 23 RBIs during his streak, went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and also grounded into a double play. ‘‘I had fun with it,’’ Posey said. ‘‘It would have been something cool to have. But at the same time, I know who Willie McCovey is — I didn’t know he had the Giants rookie record hitting streak. ... I guess in a way it’s kind of nice the attention will go back to (the team and winning) instead of the streak. After my first at-bat I tried to slow down a bit and be more patient because he was throwing so much off- speed stuff.’’ Florida avoided its first three-game losing streak since June 30-July 3. The Rangers led 4-1 after squandering a bases-loaded, one-out chance to break things open against A’s starter Vin Mazzaro (6-3) in the fifth. Texas starter C.J. Wilson (10-5) got into trouble in the sixth and Oakland was back within 4-3 when the bottom of the Rangers’ lineup came through. David Murphy led off with a 431-foot homer. Joaquin Arias beat out a grounder to short for a single, then scored on Teagarden’s homer. Teagarden started the season in the majors but was sent down because of his poor hitting. Moreland singled in his first big league at-bat and went 2 for 4, with a drive to the warning track in center among his outs. That performance could mean a demotion Friday for Chris Davis (.188 in 31 games) to make room for Cantu. Cruz had an RBI single in the first, extending his career- best hitting streak to 17 games. Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled twice and Matt Carson and Rajai Davis each had two hits. Davis was caught in a run- down to end the game. at Women’s British Open SOUTHPORT, England (AP) — Yani Tseng shot a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale on Thursday, and is tied for the lead as she pursues her third major championship. The rising star from Taiwan shot a bogey-free round that included a birdie and an eagle on the two finishing holes, putting her in a tie for the lead with Australian Katherine Hull. ‘‘I played really, really solid. I hit all greens but one today and I putted pretty well,’’ said Tseng, who already has won the Kraft Nabisco Championship this season to go with the LPGA Championship she won in 2008. ‘‘The last two par-fives were just like long par-fours with the wind, so I stayed relaxed and tried to make birdies,’’ Tseng said. ‘‘It was pretty good.’’ Hull was among the last players on the course and also made an eagle on the 18th hole — in front of near- ly deserted grandstands — to join Tseng at 4 under. Hull dropped a stroke at the fourth hole before rattling off three birdies in a four-hole stretch beginning at No. 7. ‘‘I hit a drive and a hybrid onto the last green and holed from 60 feet, a great way to finish,’’ Hull said. ‘‘I had a long talk with my caddie last week and unearthed a secret to improve my game. Three-time All-Star Roy Oswalt gave his OK to a trade from Houston to Philadelphia on Thursday, becom- ing the latest star pitcher to join the hard-charging Phillies. After getting Roy Halladay in the offseason, the two-time defending NL champions got Oswalt and a siz- able amount of cash from the Astros for pitcher J.A. Happ and two speedy prospects, outfielder Anthony Gose and shortstop Jonathan Villar. Hous- ton then traded Gose to Toronto. Oswalt joins a rotation that includes Halladay, acquired from Toronto in the offseason, and Cole Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP.
