Throughout June and July, Cleveland Community College hosted several summer enrichment programs for elementary, middle and high school students. Participants were exposed to a college campus, some for the fi rst time, and got to have fun while learning new skills. This year's programs focused on areas such as cooking, science, robotics, hair styling, computer programming, and radio and television broadcasting. Most programs lasted three days. A frequently heard comment from participants was, "I wish it lasted longer!" One of the new programs this year was First Responders. Open to rising seventh through eleventh graders, the program lasted three days and included a lot of exciting activities for participants. Thanks to help from Kings Mountain and Shelby Police Departments, Cleveland County Sheriff's Offi ce, Shelby Fire and Rescue and Cleveland County EMS, participants learned about being a fi rst responder from those who do it every day. Program sessions included information and activities related to crime scene processing, community policing and drone surveillance, the importance of communication skills, and decision making as a fi rst responder. Participants also learned to use a fi re extinguisher; had the opportunity to experience CCC's MILO Theater, an interactive situational-awareness training system; and rode in a fi re engine and an ambulance. Participant comments included: "I would do it all over again and would surely recommend it." "I love all the hands-on activities." "We had a blast."
