Another sibling took him for a lot of money many years ago, running up thousands of dollars in credit card debt. There is a good possibility that nothing will come of this hobby farm, and we'd all be out a lot of money, and for what? We aren't young anymore. What do you advise? — Torn Sister Dear Torn: It's obvious that you want to be a good sister to Johanna. When someone is having health problems, you should be supportive emotionally, offer to cook meals or help with errands. But there is no obligation to buy them a hobby farm or any other expensive slice of wish fulfillment. Johanna is using her illness to manipulate you, counting on your guilt to get what she wants. Too bad she cannot appreciate what you are already giving her: your love and caring. Booth space available at almond conference The Almond Board of California has announced that the 41st Almond Conference will take place Dec. 3–5 in Sacramento, the second year in this location after a move to allow additional space for an increasingly popular event. If California Almond growers and handlers are your customers, the trade show that runs concurrently with The Almond Conference is where you'll want to be this year. California's Almond growers produce 84 percent of the world's almond supply and 100 percent of the U.S. supply; it is the No. 1 specialty crop export in California, the nation's No. 1 ag state with net farm income of more than $16 billion. Industry members attending the conference in 2012 represented more than 90 percent of the 2011–2012 almond crop. Current industry trends are for rising prices, increasing acreage, higher yields and increasing worldwide demand, with a tight supply predicted for several years to come. The Almond Conference is the annual event where the Almond Board of California (ABC) presents a multifaceted program of production and environmental research results, marketing activities and guest speakers on a variety of subjects of interest to almond growers and handlers. With the need for expanding the conference, after 39 years in Modesto, ABC moved the three-day event last year to the Sacramento Convention Center, which has 31 meeting rooms, including a 24,000-square-foot ballroom, plus a 134,000square-foot exhibit hall, which allows exhibitors to bring their biggest production and handling equipment to the trade show floor. More than just education, The Almond Conference is a great social and networking event. In 2012, Almond Conference featured entertainers Penn & Teller at the Gala Dinner; previous entertainers have included such wellknown personalities as sportscaster Roy Firestone and adventurer Bear Grylls. New this year as an added bonus to California Almond growers in attendance, the Almond Board has teamed up this year with Polaris to give away a RANGER 400 H.O. UTV. The RANGER 400 H.O. gets the toughest jobs done with its 500-pound rear dump box capacity and On-Demand True AllWheel Drive. It is easy to maneuver, stores in barns and sheds, and fits on a trailer or can be hauled in the bed of many trucks. All registered growers in attendance will be eligible for the drawing to be held in conjunction with the trade show. To view available booth spaces, register online now or contact Jeff Taylor at (415) 9082650 or jtaylor@mosaicevents.c om to discuss sponsorship opportunities. More information is also available on the Almond Conference website. General attendee registration for growers, handlers and other allied industry members will begin later this summer. LM 4th of July Parade The Fourth of July Parade and Play Day in the Park at Mill Creek Park in Los Molinos is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4. This year's theme is Let Freedom Ring and the events are hosted by the Los Molinos Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the VFW Post 3909. The 46th annual parade closes Hwy 99E for a couple of hours as more than 100 entries file past the judge's stand hoping for cash prizes, trophies and applause from the thousands who line the parade route each year. You'll see equestrian entries as well as fancy old cars and antique tractors. There will be children on bicycles vying for a cash prize and a chance to win a new bike. Trophies are awarded for Best Of in many categories. Then head over to the Mill Creek County Park for what we call PlayDay In The Park. It's a fun packed day for the kids and families. Events include sack races, watermelon eating contests, games for all ages and free popsicles for the kids. This year PlayDay In The Park Master of Ceremonies will be Mayor Kenny Brewer. He's the best at announcing our activities and awards.
