When early European explorers first saw manatees, they thought they were mermaids. Christopher Columbus wrote in his log book that they were not as beautiful as he had thought they would be. I may be in holiday mode but I'm also looking forward to school which is just around the corner. While I'm still enjoying the final days of the Olympic Games, I'm going to get together with friends and get creative with some of our own Backyard Games. There are clever ideas in this issue— Synchronized Shadows, Water Balloon Shot Put, that sound like lots of fun. I'd like to find ways to Flip the Switch and save energy. My plan is to chill out by using some of these inventive ways to stay cool. And with my family, I know we'll enjoy A Day at the Zoo. I wonder how many different kinds of cats I might find? Zoos help save animal species from extinction. So many animal families are threatened, and I want to know more and help to do my part by visiting our local zoo. There's lots of information in this issue about Seahorses, and you can learn to draw one. This is another creature threatened by extinction. Did you know the dads are the ones who take the eggs in their pouches and develop them until it's time to release them into the wild? Proud papas! What's for Lunch? That's always an important question. This feature traces the History of School Lunches. Interesting stuff about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches—read on. So much to see and read here. I'm going to sit in the shade of a tree and read Kid Scoop News. I hope you are too.
