After escaping communist Russia in the 1970s, he came to America with only a dream and a "can do" attitude. Before he spoke English well, Yakov was able to work on his craft by telling jokes after working night shifts in upstate New York. Quickly, he found himself growing in popularity. Shortly after this period, Yakov made his way to Los Angeles where the owner of the world famous "Comedy Store", Mitzi Shore, gave him the opportunity he was dreaming of. Viewing life through the endearing eyes of a poor immigrant from communist Russia, he soon captured the hearts of the American public. Seemingly overnight, Yakov soared to the very top of the comedy world by performing on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. Soon Yakov was a regular on the hit TV show "Night Court", and even had his very own show named after his famous catchphrase "What a Country". He then branched out to the big screen appearing in movies with Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, and Jack Nicholson - Just to name a few! Since then Yakov has been a featured character on such iconic television programs as "The Simpsons", "King of the Hill", and "Major Dad". Currently, Yakov tours the globe performing his show, and when he's not touring, he performs at his own theater in Branson, MO. Many people do not realize that Yakov also earned his Masters degree as well as his PhD in psychology and Global leadership. It is this unique and captivating story that has made Yakov Smirnoff among the most beloved celebrities, spanning over 4 decades in America.
