leading up and through the World Championship by hosting scalable events. It's been a collective effort. No one entity made this happen," Pack observed. Groundwork was laid even before Experience Fayetteville came on the scene. Bike NWA worked to create a cyclo-cross culture and "did a tremendous amount of work in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation." As cycling coordinator, Pack manages the $3.2 million – and growing – budget for the Worlds as well as the events and the Experience Fayetteville organizing committee. "I deal with international stakeholders, sponsors and racers – it's a fulltime job!" To assist, Experience Fayetteville hired a sports production company experienced in world championship cycling events, Medalist Sports. "We know the local area," Rawn observed, "and they know the sport and international contacts. We wouldn't be able to do it without Medalist, our race partner." The crowning moment of the Championships will be presentation of the coveted UCI rainbow jerseys to the winning racers in each category: men and women's elite, men and women junior, and men and women under 23. "What's so exciting is that we're going to be able to present those rainbow jerseys here in Fayetteville in January. It's a great honor to get to award that," Pack said. Winners earn the right to wear the jersey for one year. The white jersey has five horizontal bands of green, yellow, black, red and blue, representing the five global continents and matching the colors of the rings on the Olympic flag. While Fayetteville's staging of the World Championships is a one-time spectacle, the spirit of cyclo-cross will carry on, as Molly Rawn affirms: "We purpose-built Centennial Park and the course to host events like this, and others of similar caliber will be held at the park. The impact is going to pay returns for decades to come for our city in terms of the economic boost and the image of our community." cyclo-cross racers have to navigate terrain and obstacles both on and off thier bicycles.
