T10 WHATS UP! June 20 - 26, 2021 tion of who will host this year's awards is still shrouded in mystery at the time of writing. We do know, though, that there will be no in-person audience or paparazzi lineup. Also similar to last year, winners will be accepting their trophies from their homes. While it's disappointing not to get a peek at those red carpet looks, viewers can surely swap their "who wore it bests" for "whose decor is best" while getting a glimpse of these stars in their natural habitats. Even so, this year's Daytime Emmys competition is fiercer than ever, with more than 3,000 submissions featuring content from the 2020 calen- dar year. The submissions, judged by a panel ranging from 10 to 50 peer professionals from across the television in- dustry, are reviewed with each category in mind. The Daytime Emmy Awards has celebrated the best of day- time television programming since 1974, and this year's cere- mony will mark the 15th time CBS has broadcast the awards show, more than any other net- work in the biz. At this time, NATAS has not yet announced the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2020, the award took a surprising twist when it went home with sportscaster Lesley Visser ("NFL Monday Night Football"). Her win and im- pressive resume have paved a path for women in the sports broadcasting industry, and it will be exciting to see if this year's winner ends up a pio- neer like Visser. Another category to watch is that of Outstanding Entertain- ment Talk Show. Last year's winner, "The El- len DeGeneres Show," is up for nomination again, and while it's earned dozens of awards in the past, it could be kicked off the throne following the con- troversy that surrounded the show's crew in 2020. The ru- mors and backlash Ellen ("Finding Dory," 2016) faced at the time of the claim may have opened the door for fellow nominees "The Kelly Clarkson Show" or "The Drew Barry- more Show," though DeGe- neres will likely be hoping her efforts to regain public sup- port will be enough to take home another win. Excitement mounts as the big night nears, so be sure to tune in to the live broadcast of "The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards" to find out who's taking home a trophy (or a few). Fans will also want to keep an eye out for more nomina- tions as the event draws closer as NATAS will be announcing nominees for both the "Day- time Children's Programming and Animation Emmy Awards" and the "Daytime Lifestyle Programming Emmy Awards" on Monday, June 28.
