T2 WHATS UP! June 20 - 26, 2021 BY RACHEL JONES TV Media R oll out the old red carpet — it's that time of the year again! Fans of daytime tele- vision will be happy to know that "The 48th Annual Day- time Emmy Awards" is airing on CBS Friday, June 25, but don't fret. If you are otherwise engaged that evening, the cere- mony recognizing outstanding achievement in American day- time television programming will also stream the following day (June 26) on Paramount+. The nominations were an- nounced by the National Acad- emy of Television Arts and Sciences on Tuesday, May 25, and the spotlight is shining bright on fan-favorite soaps this year. "General Hospital'' has raked in the most nominations by accumulating an incredible 21 nods. Meanwhile, "The Bold and the Beautiful," "Days of Our Lives" and "The Young and the Restless" have each re- ceived nominations in multi- ple categories, including all of them for Outstanding Drama Series. Overall, more than 40 categories are represented. But with 16 nominations for acting alone, "General Hospi- tal" still trumps every other soap on the docket. Nominated cast members include Leslie Charleson ("Port Charles"), Genie Francis ("The Young and the Restless"), Tristan Rogers ("The Bay"), Kimberly McCullough ("The Shield") and Caitlin Reilly ("Push Harder," 2020). Many A-list stars have got- ten their start from the medi- cal drama, including Demi Moore ("Ghost," 1990), Amber Tamblyn ("Joan of Arcadia"), John Stamos ("Full House") and Mark Hamill ("Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," 1977), so if the number of nom- inations this year is any indica- tion of the talent in this gener- ation of soap stars, it won't be long before we see these actors hitting the big screen. This year's Daytime Emmys will also honor TV legends Alex Trebek ("Jeopardy") and Larry King ("Larry King Live"), both of whom died within the last year and re- ceived posthumous nomina- tions. Trebek, who died from pan- creatic cancer at his home last November, is nominated for Outstanding Game Show Host. His death was met with an out- cry of support from longtime fans, so it's no surprise that he's been nominated a whop- ping 32 times in the category. This would be his eighth win. King is nominated for Out- standing Informative Talk Show Host, making this his fifth nomination overall. The late TV host has never won be- fore, however, which is sur- prising given his impressive 63-year career. King died in January from sepsis, a compli- cation of COVID-19. Due to the ongoing COV- ID-19 pandemic, the event will be produced remotely once again. Last year's virtual cere- mony was hosted by Sheryl Underwood ("Bulworth," 1998) and her co-hosts from "The Talk," however the ques- Caitlin Reilly from ABC's "General Hospital" And the winner is... continued on page T10 TV FEATURE 5 x 5 Not a subscriber?
