We once brought and they said they had never been Mailbox taught to write in script. These are smart boys, but I worry this could be a real handicap for them in life. Should I talk with their mother or just let it go? — Feeling Sorry in Vermont Dear Vermont: Fewer and fewer students are learning to read or write in script. With all the keyboards around, penmanship is rarely taught, and script writing has become a lost art. Will it handicap them? Perhaps if they have to read a note from Grandma, but otherwise, it's unlikely. By the time they are looking for a full-time job, most of their peers will be in the same boat. Dear Annie: I must take exception to one of your suggestions to ''Perplexed,'' whose father insisted on hearing his voice every day. I think it is ridiculous to expect adult children to call their parents every day. I am a parent of a wonderful grown son and lovely daughter-in-law. I would never expect them to call me every day. I would never be intrusive and barge in on them without calling first. Why do we allow family members to treat each other inconsiderately and without respect when we wouldn't treat others this way? Parents need to respect that their child's spouse and children come first. The kids might want to call or be with their parents more if it is not such a burden. — Frank Recycled bathroom sinks So, you've installed energy-efficient vanity lighting in your bathroom to show off your watersaving bathroom faucet. Your eco-friendly showerhead waits patiently to be used, and your dual flush toilet is the marvel of the entire bathroom. Nothing left in the bathroom to give an environmentally friendly spin, is there? What about the sink? One of the newest bathroom design trends is installing a recycled sink. So, what exactly are they recycled from? Copper Recycled copper bathroom sinks are beginning to garner more and more attention—and for good reason, since they're as much an environmental choice as they are an aesthetic one. These sinks are recycled and repurposed from other copper products, which are melted down and purified into its original pure elemental state. From there, it's hammered and then shaped into a new sink. Concrete These already environmentally friendly sinks are becoming more friendly thanks to their manufacturers' ability to reduce the carbon footprint by using around 20 to 40 percent less energy when crafting them. Manufacturers are also mixing in recycled materials like 100 percent postconsumer glass, recycled porcelain, coal fly ash and organic compounds. Recycled glass Recycled glass sinks are also becoming more common in upscale bathrooms in homes and businesses. The material seems to be more popular than ever and it's great to see it make its way into the bathroom. Just as you might suspect, these durable and stylish glass sinks are made from recycled glass bottles and industrial glass from car windows and windshields. And, speaking of cars… Car tires In a category all its own is a bathroom sink called RUBBiSH that's made entirely from recycled rubber tires. After the rubber from tires is melted down and purified of debris, the metal fibers that provide road resistance are then formed into a sheet. This is then stretched over a base frame and anchored down by the drain collar to create the shallow slope for the drain. By its very nature, the bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home in terms of resources. It only makes sense that when you give it an eco-makeover that you include the sink.
