r e d f c u.o r g | 5 Although your goal with any job interview is the same – make a lasting, positive impression – there are unique challenges with a virtual interview. Here's how to get the job done: Prepare your technology. Ensure the tech is installed and working before your appointment. You don't want to find out at the last minute that you need to download a program and then show up late. Test the internet connection, software, microphone, headphones, and camera. Ask for a phone number to call in case of a technology glitch during the meeting. Prepare your setting. Check what your interviewer will see behind you. e best choice is a blank wall, but even bookshelves are better than an unmade bed. Also, make sure pets and other household members, as well as your phone, radio, and TV, are silent and away from the camera. Consider asking a friend to practice virtually with you so you know you're adequately seen and heard and how the lighting looks (don't rely on the sun – there could be clouds on interview day). Prepare yourself. What you wear is important, from head to toe, and so is your body language. Because your interviewer won't be able to "feel" your enthusiasm as much, you'll need to be expressive with your voice and face. As with any interview, research the company and your interviewer ahead of time. Print out your resume, the job description, and your questions so that you don't navigate tabs on your computer mid-interview. And be sure to log in early for the meeting. Finish strong. Treat the virtual interview as if you're in person. Sit tall, maintain "eye contact" with the camera, and be aware that your interviewer may be recording you. If words cut out when you both speak at once, apologize and let them lead. Afterward, send a follow-up email to thank them for the opportunity. Acing Your Virtual Interview
