2A Daily News – Wednesday, June 19, 2013 Community people&events Shriner's Golf Tournament The 4th Annual Shriner's Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Sevillano Links Golf Course at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning. Cost is $90 per player and there will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the 4-person scramble format. Today their are 191 Shriner's Temples around the world aiding in the healing of children. Shriner's Hospitals for Children are changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world class research and outstanding medical education. The hospitals provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, such as burns, spinal cord injuries cleft lip and palate conditions. Service's are available to children up to 18 years of age regardless of the family's ability to pay. The Shriner's participate in many events throughout the year and hold fundraisers, like this golf tournament, to support Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Quilters to meet The Sun Country Quilters Guild will be holding its monthly meeting on Monday, June 24, at the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center, 1500 S. Jackson St., Red Bluff. This month's meeting is a Sew-In and Potluck beginning at 3 p.m. Bring your sewing machine, sewing supplies, a project to work on, along with a dish to share. A Jelly Roll Race will start at 5 p.m. Bring a Jelly Roll (40 2 1/2 inch strips), some pre-wound bobbins, scissors and your sewing machine. Directions will be given prior to the race. Don't forget to bring something to share at show and tell. There will be a member orientation in the Fireside room at 6:30. Everyone is welcome, especially new members. There will be a short meeting at 7 p.m. Interested quilters or non-quilters may attend up to three meetings in a year for a small fee of $5 per meeting, or you may join the guild for an annual membership fee of $30. B e e f I t s W h a t s ForDinner.com. 2 boneless beef top loin (strip) steaks, cut 1 inch thick (about 8 to 10 ounces each) 2 Bartlett or re Anjou pears, halved and cored 1 medium red onion, cut into 12 wedges 8 cups mixed salad green or arugula 1/4 cup chopped walnuts, chopped pecans or sliced almonds 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese, blue cheese or Manchego cheese Salt Courtesy photo Marinade: 1 cup reduced-fat or regular balsamic vinaigrette 1/4 cup maple syrup 2 teaspoons coarse grind black pepper 2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves 1. Combine marinade ingredients in small bowl. Reserve 1/2 cup marinade for dressing. Place beef steaks and 1/3 cup marinade in food-safe plastic bag; turn steaks to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 15 minutes to 2 hours. Exchange names students of the month Final students of the month for the 2013 school year were honored by the Corning Exchange Club at one of its meetings in May. Certificates and pen and pencil sets were presented to the following outstanding students for May. Luis Monroy, Senior at Centennial High was introduced by teacher Mr. Beardsley who described Luis as hard working, supportive and a class leader. Luis enjoys participating in wood shop and loves to socialize. His long term goals following graduation includes enrolling in college to pursue his education. Helena Beltran, 8th grader at Maywood Middle School was introduced by her teacher Mrs. Farmer who extolled Helena's artistic abilities and work ethic, and indicated that Helena actively participates as a teacher's aide. Helena enjoys kick boxing, and volunteerism, along with painting and dancing. Helena is looking forward to attending college to study psychology.
