Beta Phi Crier beta phi Chapter of Delta Tau Delta the ohio state university n Spring 2021 I am sure you have heard it everywhere you turn, but this past school year has been a rewarding challenge for both the undergraduate chapter and the House Corp. The men came back in the fall to a completely new setting with of all the protocols set in place by Ohio State University. Mask mandates, social distancing, testing, gatherings of more than 10 people being prohibited, and online classes became the new norm. Regular weekly testing was added to the routine when the men returned from the holiday break. Brothers Bounce Back from Hardship The active chapter has endured somewhat of a rough road through all of this. In addition to COVID-19, for most of the last few months they have defended a university investigation that resulted in a positive outcome. Chapter leadership, led by past President JD Foltz '22 and current President Ethan Garee '23, also oversaw the difficult expulsion of members who refused to pay parlor fees and who were mostly seniors. Chapter leadership is working hard to reverse this trend in the coming year. Our House Corp. collectively is proud of everything our undergraduates have achieved and, as always, their great grades. We have the makings of a Hugh Shields type of chapter and a solid advisor in Howard Harcha '12 to lead us there. Beta Phi Property Management Transition The state of the House Corp. is strong. We have taken some financial hits over the past year, but with the steady leadership of Treasurer Kyle Huff '07, we will get through this difficult time. Our Delt house is currently, and will continue to be, at or near capacity. One big upcoming change is that Ohio State University has decided to end their offered service of fraternity/sorority property management, and Delt was one of five remaining houses managed by the university. The House and Grounds committee, led by Evan Webb '15, is working on a plan to have a seamless transition to new property management come June. There were real benefits that OSU provided that will be hard to replace. I am thankful that our undergraduates were able to be included in the university management of quarantine and isolation procedures this past year. Hope on the Horizon As we wind down this school year, members of the House Corp. will be involved in transitioning to the 2021-22 school year. We will keep following university and health department guidelines as we reopen in August. Like you, we are hopeful of a clear return to normalcy. Who knows? Maybe we'll see each other in the 'Shoe this fall. Fraternally, Paul M. Falkenbach '80 President, Beta Phi House Association Beta Phi UndergradUates and alUmni leadershiP Work together to maintain QUality ChaPter A s an undergraduate, Danny Nygren '12 knew he wanted a career in medicine. After starting out as a biology major and getting all his credits in order, he took a psychology course that changed his pre- med path. He switched to psychology and, after graduating from The Ohio State, attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and landed on psychiatry as his focus during his third year. It was then that he saw a branch of medicine that served patients who were often overlooked by the rest of medicine and society, and he knew he could make a difference. "I wanted to be involved in caring for those patients," Danny shared. "Psychiatry is also a field that I think will have a lot of innovation in the next few years as we learn more about the brain and what causes mental health disorders." After medical school, Danny completed his residency in psychiatry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He knew he could take a stable job anywhere in the country since psychiatrists are in high demand. However, he wasn't ready to settle down and still wanted adventure. As a resident, he learned about a short-term, temporary option for physicians called a locum tenens doctor, which allows for travel and not a long-term commitment. "This allows me to gain experience in different parts of the country and in different types of hospitals and systems," he stated. "So far, I've worked in Montana and Oregon, and I will be in Alaska this summer." What Danny loves most about being a psychiatrist is being a provider of mental health for people who are often ignored by others. adventUre aWaits Dr. Danny Nygren '12 Shares Rewards and Challenges as Traveling Psychiatrist (Continued on page 2)
