In the Farm that Mac Built by Tammi Sauer and illustrated by Jackie Urbanovic, the barnyard residents put on a play based on the "mostly true" story of Old MacDonald, but they learn to deal with the unexpected when monkeys, elephants, and kangaroos take the stage. Small children will love the tempo of the rhymes and repetitive wording. The illustrations of the smiling pigs, exasperated scarecrow, tutu-wearing sheep, break-dancing kangaroos, and band-playing horse are hilarious. Kate Messner and artist Christopher Silas Neal's over and under series books explore nature from contrasting viewpoints: what's above and what's below. The characters in Over and Under the Rainforest, 2020, Over and Under the Pond, 2017, and Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, 2015, tell the stories of the various animals, fish, and insects who live in the skies above and in the water, land, and dirt below. Many critters are easy to find on the pagers, but readers must search the wistful, detailed illustrations to find the ones more hidden. At the end of the book, the About the Animals section describe each animals' habitat, eating habits, and little-known- facts. These are books to read again and again. In go Be Wonderful, 2021, readers follow Daisy's adventures, often with her pet dog, Mr. Bonkers, from her birth to her first day of school. Author Donna Gephart includes diversity and whimsy in telling the story of how each of the people in Daisy's life encourage her to "Go be wonderful". Francesca Chessa's sweet illustrations use muted colors and expressive emotions to convey Daisy's journey to deciding she actually is wonderful. All Stevie wants is some quiet from his noisy family when he visits the Whisper Oak Public Library. But the sounds in the library, clicking computer keys and story- telling voices, become too much and Stevie quietly tells librarian, Miss Understood, the library is too noisy. In response, Miss Understood releases characters and circumstances into the library from her special book that lead Stevie to a different perspective about what is noisy. such a library! a yiddish Folktale re-imagined, 2020, by Jill Ross Nadler, and illustrated by Ester Van Den Berg, is a boisterous, colorful, feel-good story (that would make a great movie). The true story of saving samantha by Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen and illustrated by Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen, 2004, follows the rehabilitation of a fox pup who was rescued after his leg was caught and injured in a rusty trap.
