How it works:
HYDROPOWER: A hydroelectric dam
harnesses the energy produced by moving
water. Hydropower is the least expensive
form of renewable energy.
A dam is built on a river creating a
reservoir.
Water in the reservoir collects behind
the dam wall. Dam operators control
the flow of water with a sluice gate.
When released, the water pushes
through a pipe (called a penstock)
beneath the water's surface.
This turns a turbine that then rotates
a generator to produce electricity.
