12 WHAT'S UP! MAY 16-22, 2021 LISTEN HERE! Cross-Cultural Artist Dissects Self-Doubt In New EP "Imposter" Miss Grit Miss Grit, moniker of Korean-American musician Margaret Sohn, released her "Impostor" EP Feb. 21 where she showcases relatable songs that master- fully dissect the feeling of self-doubt. "Impostor" addresses her life-long navigation through the racial impostor syndrome she experienced as a half-Korean girl growing up in the white space of the Michigan suburbs, and explores the titular impostor syndrome that so often characterizes the insecuri- ties of the early 20s. Miss Grit is a project that allows Sohn to break through self-bias, creating a version of herself that doesn't need to be limited. Expressing herself through her powerful, confident music while still being vulnerable about her insecurities is a dynamic that characterizes her work, with all of its pushes and pulls of emotion. Ultimately, Sohn says, the "Impostor" EP is about feeling self-doubt, working through it with music and letting it all subside. It's a six-song collection that's more cathartic, resolute and fully documents the array of talents she brings as a multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer. "Remember Our Creator" Reggae Angels Kings Music International The Reggae Angels released their 15th studio album, "Remember Our Creator," April 2, featuring the renowned, multi-Grammy Award-winning production duo Sly and Robbie. The new album embodies the Reggae Angels' sound with spiritual lyrics focusing on themes such as remembering God, living in love, gratitude, patience and contentment, and delivers conscious, uplifting roots reggae music. This release is a double disc CD featuring vocal and dub versions. Reggae Angels are a staple in the reggae scene. They are known to deliver high energy performances with a happy sound and a universal God-conscious message. Lead singer and band leader Peter "Fenton" Wardle reflects on the new album, saying, "This is my strongest most meaningful and musical album to date. Emotionally, the album reminds me of God and a seri- ous sense of purpose as a servant of God. It makes me feel an awareness of God and it makes me feel happy to hear the messages in melodies and song." "Pure Fabrication" Communion Tambourhinoceros Revered for building euphoric, atmospheric worlds of sound, Communions have released their sophomore full length "Pure Fabrication" on April 23. The Danish rockers' new record effortlessly straddles the cerebral and the visceral, marrying abrasive punk sensibili- ties from the artistic underground of Copenhagen's Mayhem scene with anthemic indie- and pop-rock. A 15-track collection of Odyssian scope, Commu- nions weave an intricate tapestry from "cultural debris." "Pure Fabrication" draws upon brothers Martin and Mads Rehof's personal experience as much as it does from a collage of myths. The Danish brothers spent over a decade of their childhood and early teens in Seattle, only to move back to Copenha- gen in the midst of their formative years. While "Pure Fabrication" is partly a bid at finding their place and self-understanding through the lens of stories and myths — a keen listener can spot traces of Goethe's Faust, Shakespeare's Lear, Homer's Sirens, and the Norse fate-holding Norns — at its core, it is something more: a meta-narrative on the human condition. "Sara Bug" Sara Bug Egghunt Records The 10 songs on Sara Bug's self-titled debut album, out May 14, were not meant to be shared. A culmina- tion of seven years of her life, these songs were journal entries that reckoned with defining herself. Growing up in New Orleans, Bug imagined herself to be a success- ful songwriter. "I was so deep in the music. 'Oh, I'm going to be a famous musician. When I get out of high school, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to go have a career in music,'" she explains. "I think I held on to that for so long, I had finally kind of let go, like that pressure. Now it was just fun." This eponymous project embodies Bug's journey away from the expectations of others and her younger self, allowing her creative freedom. A close listen reveals that Bug is letting the listener into the most poignant moments of the past years with sincerity and ease. She takes us on reflective motor- cycle rides, whether literal or desired. She details the loss of a family member and a trip back home from her then-residence in New York. Inspired by the detailed storytelling of Dolly Parton and Neil Young, Bug leads across state lines and along her timeline of personal growth with unconventional, vivid song structures. This spot will continue to be filled by news and reviews of new albums, both local and national. Send information about your new releases to Jocelyn Murphy at jmurphy@nwadg.com.
