In 1918, Gen. William J. Snow, who was the
chief of field artillery, decided that the area
now known as Fort Bragg – located almost in
the middle of the state – met all the desired
criteria for year-round training. That included
suitable terrain, adequate water, rail facilities
and climate, according to a Fort Bragg online
history.
As a result, Camp Bragg came into existence
on Sept. 4, 1918. The camp was named for
native North Carolinian Gen. Braxton Bragg,
who served in the Mexican-American War and
as a Confederate leader during the Civil War.
Fort Bragg is one of 10 U.S. Army installations
named for officers who led military units of
the failed Confederacy.
Early in 1921, the 13th and 17th Field
Artillery Brigades began training in the camp.
On Sept. 30, 1922, Camp Bragg became Fort
Bragg, a permanent Army post.
Since 2000, Fort Bragg soldiers have
participated in combat and humanitarian
operations in countries around the world.
Today, with roughly 57,000 military
personnel, 11,000 civilian employees and
23,000 family members, Fort Bragg ranks
among the largest military complexes in
the world, according to the installation.
It is located within Cumberland, Harnett
and Moore counties and borders the
municipalities of Fayetteville, Spring Lake
and Southern Pines.
