12 – 2021 2021 Westside Community Guide ■ GRAVETTE: attractions and amenities ■ GrAvEttE DAy Gravette Day is an annual event the town holds to celebrate its founding in 1893. It takes place the second week of August every year in Kindley Park, and features fun for the whole family. Gravette Day features food, games, vendor booths, a classic car show, parade, pageants, pancake breakfast, live music, a Dutch oven cook-off and more. Gravette Day is not only for residents of the community as it draws in thousands of people from all around the area to join in the celebration. ■ SMokE on tHE BorDEr BArBECuE Cook-off Smoke on the Border Barbecue Cook- off is an event sponsored by the Greater Gravette Chamber of Commerce, and will be entering its third year this year. e increasingly popular event invites teams from Arkansas and its surrounding states to the barbecue cook-off to compete for prize money and, of course, bragging rights. e event includes People's Choice, where visitors can sample each barbecue dish and then vote for their favorite, and the Kid's Que Burger competition where young chefs can try their hand at hamburgers. Whether you want to try your hand at grilling or just want to taste some of the best barbecue across four states, this event promises to be fun for everyone. ■ pop AlluM pArk Gravette's Pop Allum Park is an impressive 22 acres that hosts all of Gravette's local baseball and soccer teams and leagues. e park has seven baseball fields, four soccer fields, a skate park, human foosball court, and adjoins the Gravette Nature Trail. Pop Allum Park is also the site for Gravette's annual Independence Day Celebration that has food trucks, music, and a fireworks show. ■ kinDlEy pArk Named aer World War I ace pilot, Field Kindley, Kindley Park is right off of Main Street and rests on 1.5 acres. e park has a tennis court, basketball half-court, gazebo, pavilion, picnic tables, and playground. e focal point of the park is a T-33 aircra that is on loan from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. e plane was placed in the park as a tribute to Captain Field Kindley, who lost his life in a plane crash aer the war. Kindley Park is also just a short walk from Main Street where there are several local businesses and shops for visitors to explore. ■ GrAvEttE HiStoriCAl MuSEuM e Gravette Historical Museum is housed in the Kindley home, a structure built in the 1800s by A.E. and Mary Kindley. Both A.E. and Mary played significant roles in Gravette's history. A.E. was a founding member of the Bank of Gravette, and Mary served as director of the bank, following A.E.'s death. e Kindley House is on the National Register of Historic Places and has seen numerous renovations over the years, in order to better serve the community and facilitate ongoing exhibits. e museum offers a wide range of exhibits including collections of photos and obituaries, furniture, garments, military uniforms, a wooden phone booth, and a Gravette Shelling Plant Display. e museum also features a special exhibit titled "My Collection" which showcases private exhibits of collectors around Northwest Arkansas. ■ GrAvEttE pool AnD SplASH pArk e Gravette Pool and Splash Park is a seasonal attraction that underwent extensive renovation, updates, and additions in the spring of 2018. is longtime community spot now features a large pool with diving board and twisty slide. It also features a nearly 3,000 square foot splash park with slides, water spouts, splash buckets, and water sprays. ere are three large pavilions available on a first-come, first-served basis or for reservation.
