Monday, May 31 Memorial Day Memorial Day is celebrated every year on the last Monday in May. You might think of it as the official start of summer, part of a fun three-day weekend, or the day that the pool opens, but the holiday is much more than that. Memorial Day honors the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the American military. It's a day to remember those who could not come home, and the reason we have the freedom that we enjoy today. Maybe you have grandparents, great-grandparents or other family members to remember on this day. The day began after the Civil War as "Decoration Day" when people placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. After World War I, it became a holiday to honor Americans who died fighting in any war. Then 1971, President Nixon declared it a federal holiday. Here are some ways to honor Memorial Day: • Fly the American flag. • Visit a veterans cemetery or memorial and bring flowers or a flag to leave there. There are three national cemeteries in Arkansas: Fayetteville National Cemetery at 700 Government Avenue in Fayetteville, Fort Smith National Cemetery at 522 Garland Avenue in Fort Smith, and Little Rock National Cemetery at 2523 Springer Boulevard in Little Rock. There are also two state veterans cemeteries in Arkansas: The Arkansas Veterans Cemetery at 1501 West Maryland Avenue in North Little Rock, and the Arkansas Veterans Cemetery in Birdeye, Arkansas. • Sing a patriotic song, like the National Anthem or America the Beautiful. Or recite the Pledge of Allegiance. • Send a care package and write a thank you letter to a soldier who is currently serving in the armed forces.
