We need water to LIVE and
GROW! Plants and animals do too!
Think about it…you use water
every single day, and lots of it. You
drink it, brush your teeth with it,
take a shower or bath, and, now
that summer is coming, you even go
swimming in it. We are lucky in this
country because water comes out
of the faucet every time you turn
it on. In other places in the world,
some children must walk miles to
get access to water, while others
make do with very little every day.
The world has lots of water, but
it also has lots of living things that
need it, and not all of it can be used.
Water covers about 70% of the
earth's surface. That sounds like
a lot of water, but only 3% of it is
freshwater that doesn't contain salt.
Most of that freshwater is frozen,
which means that only about 1%
of all the water on Earth is really
available for drinking and other
uses. That's the same amount that
was here millions of years ago,
and today there are millions more
people using it. That's why it is so
important to take care of the water
we have.
Here in Northwest Arkansas, we
get our water from Beaver Lake.
We all need to do our part to use
less water, keep our water clean and
protect our precious water source.
In the United States, the average
person uses 185 gallons of water
every day, and most of that is used
in the bathroom, for things like
washing their hands, brushing their
teeth, bathing, and flushing the
toilet.
You can save water by taking
quick showers instead of baths, and
turning off the faucet while you are
brushing your teeth. When it comes
to the toilet, well, flush when you
need to, but not more than you
need to!
People also use lots of water for
cooking, cleaning, and, of course,
drinking. The world is counting on
kids like you to help save water by
remembering to turn off the faucet
and not turning it on full-blast every
time you use it. Fill a glass half full
of water to drink first, then refill if
you're still thirsty. Use the water
from melted iced cubes to water
plants.
