Take mom on an adventure this Mother's
Day! Pack a picnic (see the recipes on page
38) and get out and enjoy of the many great
activities around Northwest Arkansas. Here
are some ideas for fun and safe outings for
the whole family:
• Take mom on a picnic to at the largest
state park in Arkansas, hobbs state
park in Rogers. It's along the shore of
Beaver Lake and there are plenty of trails
you can access for walking, hiking and
mountain biking. The interactive Hobbs
Visitor Center is fun too. The visitor center
is open with restrictions (Visitors age
10 & up must wear masks to enter. The
restrooms will be open, but the drinking
fountain will be closed.)
• Or, take your picnic to devil's den
state park in Winslow, Arkansas.
This gorgeous park has hiking trails,
waterfalls, picnic areas and a cool
dam. Admission to the park is free.
The Visitor Center and Gift Shop are open
with limited capacity and hours. Boat rentals
are available.
• Enjoy some history with your picnic at
the 900-acre prairie grove Battlefield
state park, one of the most preserved
Civil War battlefields in the country. The
playground is closed, but you can have a
picnic at one of the tables and take a walk
on a beautiful one-mile paved walking trail.
Take a driving tour or walk at pea ridge
national Military park. This beautiful
park preserves a 4,300-acre battlefield that
commemorates the battle of March 7-8,
1862 of the Civil War. It's located 10 miles
north of Rogers, just off US Highway 62.
Although the park visitor center is closed
and entrance fees have been waived, the
park tour road and trails are open. There's
even a cell phone tour with short audio clips
about the Battle of Pea Ridge, the men who
fought here, local flora and fauna and the
impact of the American Civil War on the
people of Northwest Arkansas.
