House Corporation Board Focuses on Maintenance of Chapter House During Pandemic S ince last March, the house corporation board has been in a "holding pattern." As COVID restrictions and requirements dictated operating processes, the board provided support with financial adjustments, cleaning, signage and sanitizers. All Panhellenic groups on campus faced the same challenges. The Mizzou Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life conducted weekly Zoom calls to help keep all the Greek house corporation boards updated on university requirements and all possible resources for our groups. Our members did a great job of managing the challenges. They restricted access to the chapter house to in-house members only and followed all university protocols. In February 2021, out-of-house members were allowed to re-enter the facility. All board meetings have been held via Zoom, so we have not been in the house for over seven months. Hopefully, we are turning the corner in getting back to a more "normal" routine. During this time, all required repairs were made, which included repairs to the kitchen refrigerator and oven, kitchen drain, security camera replacement and outside lighting adjustments. All other projects were put on hold while we rode out the financial impact of the pandemic. Fortunately, we appear to be through the worst of it and are hoping to get back on track with reviewing plans for updates and renovations. With the upcoming centennial in 2022, we look forward to seeing many of you at the chapter house to celebrate. LITB, Beverly Wood Nichols '75 House Corporation President Alpha Nu Adapts to COVID-19 A lmost everyone can remember word-for-word the conversations they had on March 13, 2020: who told them they would be working remotely "for the foreseeable future" and where they were when they got the emails from professors letting them know when remote learning would begin. For me, it was month two of being Alpha Nu's chapter advisor and I had just driven home to Arkansas to work remotely at my parents' house instead of isolating in Columbia. Those first few days were busy with meetings of the chapter's advisory and house corporation boards and headquarters staff. It seemed like deciding what to do in that moment would be the toughest part, but we had no idea what was to come. There are 251 amazing young women who call 900 Richmond Ave. home (both literally and figuratively) who provided grace and space for chapter leadership to determine appropriate next steps. When the house closed, the 72 live-in members were faced with quick decisions of where to go and how much of their belongings to take with them. As the weeks progressed and we realized that we would not be returning after spring break, conversations around refunds for dues and fees began, as well as discussion about what the fall would look like. Thankfully, there is an amazing group of staff members at Alpha Chi Omega HQ who dedicated their time over the following months to make sure we were guiding our chapter in the way that was safest and best for collegiate members. We refunded members appropriately for the time they were not on campus and altered our housing capacity numbers and dues in the fall to ensure a fair cut for both live-in and out-of-house members. Additionally, we modified nearly every event throughout the year to follow COVID guidelines and keep our sisters safe. The women of Alpha Nu were able to maintain a healthy environment and be flexible with women who had unforeseen circumstances. Luckily, the majority of women remained healthy because of the many modifications we made. For the fall 2020 semester, our house was only open to live-in members to mitigate the spread of the virus. Additionally, we extended our dining period and reduced capacity, allowing everyone to eat in the dining room in fewer numbers over a longer period of time. We revised cleaning protocols and encouraged members to wipe down surfaces daily. Additionally, we had a strict mandate requiring masks in any shared areas. We had guidelines posted throughout the house denoting the capacity of the space and enforcing the six-foot social distancing guideline. Overall, I'm very proud of the response to COVID-19 challenges by the women of Alpha Nu. Their ability to continually adapt to a changing landscape and show kindness and respect to one another each day left me elated and so thankful to be their advisor.
