Although he made some great friends, he says he was missing the sense of community that Greek houses provide. "I was looking for something more in my college experience," Josh said. "I was also searching for an easy way to get involved on campus, and Theta Chi provided lots of ways to do that." At the time, Alpha Mu Chapter had a new house under construction with a good mix of new members and upperclassmen. "That sense of bonding with a new pledge class combined with the legacy of older brothers and alumni was appealing from the standpoint of being part of something bigger," Josh said. While living in the chapter house, Josh enjoyed hanging out, participating in group study sessions, and finding things to do on campus or in Ames with his brothers. "I had some great roommates over the semesters and loved getting to know different people in the house," Josh said. "It's such a unique living situation, and I'm not sure I fully appreciated it while I was in school. I'm glad I made the decision to live in the house through my senior year because it brought a richness to my college experience that I don't think I would have found anywhere else." Living in through his senior year, Josh was able to see many brothers develop their leadership skills through their roles within the chapter. He grew alongside them through his various executive office positions, including marshal, house manager, and scholarship chairman. "I know Theta Chi played a big part in helping my brothers realize their potential," Josh said. "It definitely did for me." Even as an alumnus, Josh has remained dedicated to Theta Chi by serving as a chapter advisor for Alpha Mu. "I've witnessed what a positive fraternity experience can do personally and professionally," Josh said when asked what motivated him to volunteer. As an advisor, Josh has seen Alpha Mu undergo a transformation, becoming a fraternity that is consistently among the top in grades, recruitment, and campus participation. Alpha Mu has also been recognized for many of these achievements both locally and by Theta Chi International Headquarters. Despite these high notes, Josh says there is still work to be done. "I'm proud to serve with dedicated alumni and excellent undergraduate leadership to help the chapter reach its potential," Josh said. Josh encourages other alumni to reach out if they are interested in getting involved in the chapter. "There are lots of ways to get involved," Josh said. "Whether that's by hosting an informal gathering to catch up with brothers, submitting the name of a prospective member to the recruitment chairmen, or in a more formal role as a member of the chapter advisory board or alumni corporation board." With the 100th anniversary of Alpha Mu Chapter coming up in 2022, now is a great time to reestablish those connections, celebrate the rich history of the chapter, and work to ensure Alpha Mu will be around for another 100 years. Outside of his involvement with Theta Chi, Josh is a technology solutions architect at John Deere. He leads a team responsible for providing solutions to enable John Deere's global development teams to work effectively and securely in the cloud. Josh lives in Ames with his wife and three kids and enjoys chatting with brothers or catching up over lunch.
