8B – Daily News – Monday, July 19, 2010 Last 2 weeks of summer camps at Discovery Center The Sacramento River Discovery Center will have the last two weeks of camps beginning today and continuing until July 30. Each week’s camp fea- tures a new and very dif- ferent focus. The July 19 week is called “Get Wet” and July 26 theme is “1491.” The SRDC Summer Camps program makes use of the 488 acre Men- docino National Forest Red Bluff Recreation Area as their classroom. Zach Whitten continues his hands on learning through a grant from the Paskenta Band of Nomla- ki Indians. Zach brings his experiences as both a student and teacher to 6 to12 year olds attending the summer camps pro- gram. The “Get Wet” week will have the campers a chance to put on their old shoes and grungy clothes and get wet in Ben‚s pond, the lake and the slough. They will be col- lecting water from the various sources and then usie microscopes to see what lives in the different waters, including some very small water bugs. They will get to use a underwater periscope and build their own aquarium and even make a “stuffed salmon.” Lots of wet fun and learning will take place during the week. The last week of camps July 25 to 30 will focus on Native Ameri- cans and the different activities of groups before “the white man arrived.” Campers will learn about famous Native Americans in history, erect a tepee, weave a basket, learn fees are $50 per camper per week, and include a $10 non-refundable regis- tration fee. Camper schol- arships funds may be available thanks to gener- ous donations from Soroptimist International of Red Bluff, Kiwanis of Red Bluff and Wells Fargo Bank. Zach is assisted and youth are supervised by two graduate Natural Resource Interns and the Center manager. These positions are funded through a grant provided by Pacific Gas & Elec- tric Company. There will also be a spe- cial presentation by mem- bers of the local Paskenta ★★ ★ Band of Nomlaki Indians. The SRDC Summer Camps meet each day from 8 a.m. until noon, at the Center, 1000 Sale Lane.
