4B – Daily News – Monday, July 19, 2010 Biden says tea party is not a racist movement WASHINGTON (AP) — The tea party is not a racist group, says Vice Pres- ident Joe Biden, though he believes that some of those involved in the movement have expressed racist views. ‘‘Very conservative, very different views on govern- ment and a whole lot of things,’’ Biden said during an interview broadcast Sun- day on ABC’s ‘‘This Week.’’ ‘‘But it is not a racist organization.’’ President Barack Obama doesn’t think so, either, Biden said. The National Associa- tion for the Advancement of Colored People approved a resolution last week calling on tea party activists and others to ‘‘repudiate the racist element and activi- ties’’ within the political movement. Tea party organizers say racism does not have any place in their activities. Crit- ics have pointed to signs and other actions at tea party gatherings as evidence of racist elements. In defending the Nation- al Tea Party Federation, spokesman David Webb said Sunday the coalition of local and regional tea party groups has expelled the Tea Party Express from its ranks for refusing to remove its spokesman, conservative talk radio host Mark Williams, after he posted a blog that satirized the NAACP and referred to its president, Benjamin Jeal- ous, as ‘‘Tom’s nephew and NAACP head colored per- son.’’ The blog post was ‘‘clearly offensive,’’ Webb said. Former Minuteman clinches GOP Assembly nomination SACRAMENTO (AP) — Just a few years ago, as head of California’s largest Minuteman group, Tim Donnelly worked to fend off outsiders seeking to cross the state’s borders. He now finds himself the out- sider as he attempts to step into the political arena and take a seat in the state Legislature. Donnelly, 43, stands a strong chance of becoming the first tea party member to win high office in California. On Friday, the Secretary of State’s office certified his 631- vote margin of victory for the Republican primary in the 59th Assembly District, which is split evenly between Los Ange- les and San Bernardino coun- ties. Donnelly lives in the San Bernardino Mountains commu- nity of Twin Peaks, near Lake Arrowhead, and founded the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps of California in 2005. He has received enthusiastic sup- port from local tea party groups and earned the endorsement of Independence Caucus, a nation- al organization that uses trained volunteers — mainly tea party activists — to vet and promote candidates. Donnelly is one of several California legislative candidates this year touting their average- Joe status and pledging devotion to the Constitution and small- government principles. But he might be the only self-described ‘‘tea party Republican’’ to run in a district where GOP candi- dates actually have the upper hand. In Los Angeles, 53rd Assem- bly District hopeful Nathan Mintz also is hoping to use his tea party ties as a springboard to a state legislative seat but faces a higher hurdle. To capture the coastal dis- trict’s open seat, the 26-year-old radar systems engineer and South Bay Tea Party founder will have to overcome Democ- rats’ 12-point registration advantage. But he believes his socially centrist, fiscally conser- vative platform will resonate with independents. ‘‘At this point in time, I care more about gay unemployment than I care about gay marriage,’’ said Mintz, of Redondo Beach. ‘‘People get obsessed with these social issues, but the greatest social issue is the debt and the state of the economy we’re leav- ing our children.’’ Mintz will face Democrat Betsy Butler of Marina del Rey, a former fundraiser for two environmental groups and Con- sumer Attorneys of California. The political landscape is quite a bit different in Donnel- ly’s Assembly District, which has an open seat. Republicans hold a 9-point registration edge. Donnelly stepped down from the Minutemen in 2006 to return to his family’s plastics business. He said his decision to run for office — like his crusade against illegal immigration — was an attempt to take control of the law from elected officials who haven’t been handling it proper- ly. He said he took on the candi- date’s role reluctantly because he believed no one else properly represented conservatives. ‘‘When you’re worried you’re going to lose your home, your job, everything you care about, you don’t feel that confi- dence you really need to portray as a candidate,’’ he said. Donnelly said he will restore fiscal discipline and common sense to the Legislature. His proposed ‘‘10 percent Solution’’ would reward government employees for cutting spending in their departments by giving them 10 percent of the resulting savings as a shared bonus. Implementing such a plan might require the Legislature’s approval, said Lynelle Jolley, a spokeswoman for the Depart- ment of Personnel Administra- tion. She said it sounded similar to the state’s existing Employee Suggestion Program, which offers rewards ranging from $50 to $50,000 to state employees who submit ideas that reduce spending or improve safety. Donnelly also advocates deporting all illegal immigrants from state prisons, except those on death row or serving life sen- tences — a step he says would reduce prison congestion and save almost $2 billion. Last year, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed sav- ing more than $180 million by commuting the sentences of thousands of immigrants in the state’s prisons and turning them over to federal authorities to be deported. About 19,000 inmates are immigrants, but Schwarzenegger’s proposal ruled out early release for about half that population because they were convicted of sex offenses or violent crimes. Donnelly’s primary win sur- prised many. Second-place can- didate Chris Lancaster, a pub- lishing company executive, was well-financed and backed by the California Republican Assem- bly, the California Taxpayer Protection Committee and other prominent players. Donnelly’s lack of ties to the GOP establishment served as an asset, not an obstacle, his sup- porters said. His Democratic opponent, Darcel Woods, pre- dicts just the opposite for the general election. ‘‘With my opponent being who he is, that’s frightening to the people in the community,’’ said Woods, 51, who described the Minutemen as an extremist group. ‘‘I’ve had Republicans approach me and say they can’t see themselves voting for him because he’s so divisive.’’ Woods, of La Verne, believes she will appeal to moderate Republicans and the 17 percent of district voters who don’t identify with either party. She is a Chaffey College professor of correctional science and a for- mer sheriff’s deputy who was appointed to the state parole board by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007. In the past, a more centrist candidate such as Woods might have had an edge, said Christian Grose, an assistant professor of political science at the Universi- ty of Southern California. But 2010 is no typical election year, he said. ‘‘A tea party candidate is going to appeal to a group of voters who are proving to be particularly enthusiastic and who will probably turn out in high numbers in November,’’ Grose said.
