Past President Connie Ross delivered it to Ginger Mohler, Society president. Mohler thanked the club, Red Bluff Elks Lodge and WalMart Distribution Center for their major donations. Along with contributions of other groups and individuals, the society was able to provide its assistance tocounty residents referred to specialists and hospitals in other areas, she said. It is the unwant- ed, oft-maligned stepchild of the calendar. Forcing my eyelids to unstick, I flop my hand across the nightstand like a fish out of water, searching for my spectacles. I wrap them around my ears and peer out the window, immediately wondering why. On the other side of the glass there is nothing worth seeing; a graywashed, dreary, cheerless, featureless foggy curtain. Red- woods might thrive in such envi- rons but I am not made of wood; nor, especially on this morning, do I feel that I stand tall caressing the sky. I wipe the last remnants of an unremembered, but disturbing, dream from my psyche, plant my feet on the cold hardwood floor, and shuffle sorrowfully to the bathroom to begin my morning constitutional. Showering is so pointless. Why get clean? I’ll just be dirty again tonight. Yet, I lather up, feeling like a hypocrite against the entropy of time. Life’s patterns, all so banal; why am I here? Why bother? What’s the use? There is no mistaking; it is Mon- day with a capital "mon." The whole week lies forebodingly ahead. Five days to the weekend. Dear Lord, please give me strength — and lots of chocolate. A chirping, artificial, annoying ditty is emanating from my cell phone; the voice mail notification informing of a received message. And while we’re on the subject, whose bright idea was it to make alerts sound "cutesy?" Whatever hap- pened to a good old-fash- ioned blaring buzzer? Twit- tering upbeat sounds are for birds, not electronic appliances. Begrudgingly, I thrust my forefinger onto the speed dial button, antici- pating yet another time- wasting activity I will have to squeeze into my already- bursting schedule; or a loathsome, pathetic, high- pressure sales pitch left by an automaton robo-telemarketer trying to separate me from some of my miserly earnings. Surprisingly, from the speaker pops the upbeat, wide-awake sound of my son calling from southern California. Assuming the worst, panic squeezes my chest; why would he call so early unless some- thing is wrong? Gotta get back on the floor." I am frozen in posture, staring dumbly at the small speaker on the telephone. I poke replay; yep, that’s him, not somebody else’s son who dialed a wrong number. Replay. Doesn’t sound like he’s on drugs or anything. Replay. Replay. Scott Q. Marcus Eyes moist with joy, I mutter to no one, "That’s my son." A goofy smile is cemented on my face. One brief moment; a sim- ple, heartfelt thought; yet strong enough to push a complete revolution of outlook. You gotta love a Monday like this, even without chocolate. Ensuring I pressed "save," I depart on my morning walk, grin- ning joyfully as the fog embraces me. "Hi Pops," says he. "I had to open so I’ve been awake since four. My coworkers were talking about our parents and I realized, that although I think it a lot, I don’t say it. I wanted you to know how much I admire you. You’re a role model, the man I want to be. Main St. Clay Parker donated $1,674.96 to the Tehama County Young Marines. The funds were from the remainder of his 2010 Re- election Committee. Receiving the check from Parker was Young Marines Unit Comman- der, Sgt. John Minton, Marine veteran. Parker has been a lead- ing partner with the Young Marines in Tehama County since the unit was first formed in October 2005. The Red Bluff Police Association, Tehama County Peace Officers Association, Police Activities League, California Highway Patrol, Red Bluff Fire Department, Red Bluff High School, Vista Mid- dle School, Red Bluff city Council, Tehama County Board of Supervisors and many businesses and indi- viduals have donated to the unit over the years. Parker was instrumen- tal in having a resolution drawn up from the Cali- fornia Sheriffs Associa- tion stating that the Young Marines is a leader in youth drug demand reduction education in California and sets the example for all other youth to follow. Assem- blyman Jim Nielsen and Rep. Wally Herger also had similar resolutions drawn up in the State Assembly and the Con- gress, respectively. The Young Marines One does not need to have served in the military to apply to be a youth advo- cate in the program. Vet- erans from the other branches of service are encouraged to apply. The national motto of the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is, "Strengthening the lives of America's youth." The Tehama County unit's motto is, "Claiming victo- ry over drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gangs and vio- lence." The Tehama County Courtesy photo On Thursday, July 15, Sheriff Clay Parker donated $1,674.96 to the Tehama County Young Marines. Receiving the check from Parker was Young Marines Unit Commander, Sgt. John Minton, U.S. Marine Veteran. first began in 1959 in Waterbury Conn. as part of the Brass City Detach- ment of the Marine Corps League and is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit youth education program with youth drug demand reduction education as it's main focal point. Three- hundred units are spread out over the country. There are more than 11,000 youth in the national program with more than 3,400 adult volunteers. The Young Marines are always look- ing for a few good men and women to be come registered adult leaders and who also understand that the program belongs to the youth themselves. Young Marines is proudly encouraged and partially supported by Marine Corps League Detach- ment 1140, Tehama/Red Bluff. With all of the encour- agement, support and love of all of those who have given to the Young Marines this unit was able to be named national 2009 recipients of the Secretary of Defense's Fulcrum Shield for youth drug demand reduction education and also the national 2010 Unit of the Year. This support has enabled the youth in the program to effectively uti- lize the Core Values of honor, courage, commit- ment, teamwork, leader- ship and discipline to their best advantage in the war on drugs.
