The Tehama County Museum in the City of Tehama was one of many sites to benefit from the Mercy High School Community Service Program this spring. Under the watchful eye of Mercy High Principal Paul Weber, seven young men arrived at the Museum at 9 a.m. and tackled three outside projects for the Museum: water line extension in the front lawn (pictured above); landscape fabric and bark installation around crepe myrtle trees in front of the Marty Graffell Annex; and utility box "gopherproofing" for the Annex. Ron Warner, longtime supporter of the Museum and retired member of the Tehama County Board of Supervisors helped direct the project. "This is a wonderful program that Mercy High School has organized in that the community in general and the Tehama County Museum in particular benefit from the energy and enthusiasm of these young people, and the young people benefit by learning some new skills while they incorporate the idea of community service into their value systems," Warner said. "This is one of several examples of community support for the TCM," Chris Bauer President said. "We appreciate the work that the Mercy High students did for us and we look forward to doing it again, perhaps in the fall." Bauer went on to explain that the TCM has benefitted over the years from this kind of community support, and welcomes the opportunity to forge these kinds of partnerships. Rancho Tehama students visit nursery Courtesy photo Rancho Tehama SERRF students recently visited the local Golden Valley Nursery owned by Fred Spanfelner as part of their "I Want To Be A Healthy Me" program. During their visit, they learned that the nursery grows walnut trees from seed, grafts the trees and sells them throughout the state of California. Alberto Perez demonstrated grafting for the students, who were fascinated with the process. Exploring acres of wildflowers planted by Mr. Spanfelner and getting to pick some was a real treat for the students who asked him what the purpose was for all of the flowers. His response: "I planted them with the idea that if they make just one person's day brighter when they see the fields of flowers, it would have been worth it."
