How many of them are there? — Sheila Post, via e-mail A : The Hallmark Channel drama — which recently began its eighth season — is inspired by the set of novels that author Janette Oke la- beled her "Canadian West" series. Originally published in 1985, "When Calls the Heart" was the first of them; then came "When Comes the Spring," "When Breaks the Dawn," "When Hope Springs New," "Beyond the Gathering Storm" and "When Tomorrow Comes." Not long ago, "When Calls the Heart" star Erin Krakow told us that she hadn't read the books when she landed the central role of Elizabeth Thatcher (who added the last name Thornton in marriage), but she quickly did her home- work and caught up on the character by diving into Oke's stories. Q : I enjoy Perdita Weeks as Higgins on "Magnum P.I.," and I'm wondering what she did before that show. — George Clay, Grand Junction, Colo. A : The British-born actress appeared in a good num- ber of movies and television programs in her homeland, but here, she arguably was best-known for her roles in the series "The Tudors" and "Penny Dreadful" (both shown by Showtime in the U.S). She also appeared in the Steven Spielberg-directed film "Ready Player One" just before start- ing her CBS "Magnum" role as Juliet Higgins, a revision of the character played by John Hillerman in the original, Tom Selleck-starring version of the show. Is that true? — John Ben- son, via e-mail A : A 10-episode revival cov- ering a single case is be- ing planned for Paramount+, which — for those still not aware of it — is the streaming service previously known as CBS All Access. Though it might seem a little soon for consideration of bringing it back, since the original show ended its 15-season CBS run just a year ago, that long a stay indicates how potent the series still was in delivering an audience. Additionally, Paramount+ has a related, un- scripted series titled "The Real Criminal Minds" in the works. "Criminal Minds" (which included Joe Mantegna, Mat- thew Gray Gubler and Kirsten Vangsness among its stars) is said to be one of Netflix's most viewed offerings, which likely led to the idea of starting up the franchise again. No casting had been confirmed at the time of this writing, but it seems logical that some of the original cast members would be involved to some degree.
