Award to Van Ellis, widow of our great Beta Tiger Ellis '56, who
passed away in 2011. Both Harold Hook '53 and Barton Boyle '53
paid a wonderful tribute to Tiger, who had been deeply involved with
Zeta Phi's house corporation for years and was an early inspiration in
promoting the new house. We were pleased that Van and Tiger's two
daughters could be present.
Jason Swindle '93 then presented a tribute
to the late Dr. Hugh E. Stephenson Jr. '43,
who was the guiding light of the chapter
for seven decades. We were very pleased
that Hugh's widow, Sally, son, Ted, and
daughter, Ann, could all be present. Hugh
was a supporter of building the new facility
and led the fundraising effort for the last
house built in 1963. Beyond the bricks and
mortar, he was an inspiration to many Betas.
Campaign Chairman Dave Spence '80
thanked everyone for their support and
reminded us that no one thought a task of this
magnitude could be accomplished during
one of the most difficult financial times in
our country's history. It only proves the
strength and greatness of our chapter.
September 7 will be remembered by many as
the conclusion to a very challenging project
and another new beginning for one of the
greatest fraternities in the country.
Dave Spence '80 addresses the crowd at the dedication.
Dining Hall
A tribute to Dr. Hugh E. Stephenson Jr. '43
hangs in the chapter house.
As our active members enjoy the chapter
house, we are very proud of our efforts
and appreciative of our alumni who made
a financial commitment. The reality now is
that we must raise more to reach our $10
million goal and pay down our incurred debt.
Any additional support to help with these
items would be most appreciated.
