MARCH 2021 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 35 Presidio Heights — The intent of this design is to preserve the home's period characteristics, yet create a kitchen suitable for contemporary living, including accessibility and ease of use for the family's two young children. Design solutions: Create more storage for family with second row of cabinets on high; utility cabinet to store ladder to readily access cabinets on high; create one large window from two smaller ones and center the sink accordingly; magnetize custom panels for the utility cabinet to allow children to display their art + schedules; create by placing sheet metal underneath wood cabinet panel; appliance garage hides a custom bread bar, making for a one-stop place for the kids to make their own toast in the morning; speed oven placed at height accessible to the 5 y/o and 7 y/o; external blower hood for quiet ventilation given the proximity of sleeping area to kitchen; lengthen wall in order to accommodate large-scale art. Lovely in Lynn Valley — The purpose of the kitchen renovation was to create an open concept area that remained light and airy, but also served multiple functions for a young growing family. The original kitchen was dark, dated, and had inefficient storage, the lighting was not sufficient; the island was a very awkward shape. The challenge was how to get a high-functioning kitchen with as much seating as possible. We created an efficient workspace, a versatile seating arrangement, and an open concept plan to cook while entertaining or watching kids. We vastly improved the storage by having cabinetry that went to the ceiling, having a variety of storage styles and inserts. By removing a wall at the end of the kitchen, we could open the space up and get in a larger fridge. All white custom cabinetry was designed around the perimeter to maximize storage. Panel-ready appliances were used to create an uninterrupted harmonious backdrop. The hood fan is paneled in shiplap to give a casual focal point to the kitchen without interrupting the back wall's upper cabinets. A modern matte black kitchen faucet paired with a white apron front sink created the perfect combination for the "modern farmhouse." The island is painted in a deep-sea blue colour for impact, and we used gold hardware to add casual glamour and to feature the island as furniture in the center of the space. Standard recessed pot lights were used for task lighting and the pendants over the island added the right touch of glamour.
