By Karen Rice Official Kids Mag What the heck is oobleck? It's a solid. No, wait…it's a liquid! On second thought, it's both! It's a slimy, funny substance with an equally funny name. The mixture is named after the strange material that falls from the sky in one of our favorite Dr. Seuss books called "Bartholomew and the Oobleck". Take the book out of the library and read it before or after you do this fun science activity! Oobleck is made from a mixture of cornstarch and water. But although you combine a liquid and a solid, the mixture doesn't become one or the other. Oobleck is totally weird! It is a liquid until pressure is applied to it! Oobleck and other pressure-dependent substances (like Silly Putty and quicksand) are known as non-Newtonian fluids. What?? Here's the science part: A non-Newtonian fluid is neither a liquid nor a solid but a little of both! Other substances change from solids to liquids to gases when we change the temperature, such as freezing water into ice or boiling it away into steam. But non-Newtonian fluids change states because of changes in pressure, instead of temperature. Here comes the fun part… Let's make some OOBLECK and play with it! materials • 1 cup of water • 1 to 2 cups of cornstarch (add it as you go) • Mixing bowl • Food coloring (optional) directions • Pour one cup of cornstarch into the mixing bowl, and dip your hands into it. Can you feel how smooth the powder is? It's made up of super-fine particles. • Now pour the water in, mixing slowly as you go because you may not need the entire 2 cups. • Keep adding more water until the mixture becomes thick (and hardens when you tap on it). Add more cornstarch if it gets too runny, and more water if it becomes too thick. • Add a few drops of food coloring if you want, but beware, your hands will get dyed (add the coloring to the water before you mix it with the cornstarch.) • Oobleck is non-toxic, but please be careful not to get it in your eyes, and wash your hands after handling it. And DON'T EAT THE OOBLECK! It doesn't taste good anyway. now for the "experimentation" • Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get messy! • When you sink your fingers into the oobleck, it feels firm and powdery. Pick it up and it melts back into the bowl like the bad guy in Terminator. • Tap on the surface of oobleck and it feels firm and solid. Apply and little more pressure and your fingers will sink into it like a liquid. • Form it into a ball or squeeze it in your fist…it's a solid! • Then, hold a handful in your open palm and let it ooze through your fingers— it's a liquid! • Move your fingers through the mixture slowly, then try moving them faster and see what happens. • Extra: If you have a large plastic bin or tub, you can make a GIANT batch of oobleck, otherwise known as your own patch of quicksand! Multiply the quantity of each ingredient by 10 or more and mix it up. Take off your shoes and socks and try standing in the oobleck! Can you walk across it without sinking in? Let you feet sink down and then try wiggling your toes.
