By Jay Bobbin Q : I was surprised that "The Resident" moved past the coronavirus pan- demic so quickly in its season premiere. Will it be addressed at all as the current season continues? — Robert Brace, West Sen - eca, N.Y. A : We expect that it will continue to be referenced by the Fox drama, if not as the thrust of a given story. Series star Matt Czuchry explained to us at the start of Season 4 that although a responsibility was felt to address the situation, as was the case with many other series and certainly medical shows (witness "Grey's Anato- my," on which the title charac- ter contracted COVID-19), the decision was made to move on from it to give viewers a sense of optimism and of there being light at the end of the tunnel. That's why the series flashed forward to show the post-pandemic wedding of Conrad (Czuchry) and Nic (Emily VanCamp) before the season opener was over. Still, the hospital staff suffered a COVID-caused loss within the course of that hour, so it's a matter of the program trying to balance the health realisms of the times with the escapism it wants to offer the audience. Q : Why was Al Olinsky taken off "Chicago P.D.," and will he be coming back? — Barb Owens, via e-mail A : Well, since he's de- ceased ... no, he won't be coming back, though he remains prominent in cable and streaming repeats of ear- lier episodes The character's death was a function of story, from what the NBC drama's producers have, and they have pointed out how well they got along with actor Elias Koteas. They've said that because of that, breaking the news to him that his Olinsky would be killed off was a rough conversation for them to have with him, but they noted that Koteas took it graciously. Ev- ery now and then, the show's continuing characters still ref- erence Olinsky. Q : Did I hear right when Nancy called another character Gil Bobbsey in this year's first new episode of "Nancy Drew"? Was that supposed to be as in the Bobbsey Twins of the mys- tery books? — Donna Shaw, via e-mail A : You did hear right. It certainly was a grown-up version of the Bobbsey Twins featured in that episode — also with Gil's sibling Amanda, with the two played by Praneet Akilla and Aadila Dosani — and that was perfectly in keep- ing with with the approach of Kennedy McMann's title char- acter on The CW series, now in its second season.
