After receiving a grant to help with the initial restoration, and through many hard hours by volunteers, the Assay Offi ce was reborn into the Bouse Museum in 1993. "The Original 'Bouse Assay Offi ce' sign still welcomes folks to the Museum," says Charlie. "In fact during the four years we've been here, we've had several visitors coming in with rocks to see if what they thought was gold, was real." Today's Museum also features artifacts from nearby mining activities, pioneer homes, ear- ly school days. The Miner's Cabin was moved from the Swansea Mine and complemented with meager furnishings and cooking utensils from the mining days. When you stop by, don't miss the hand cranked slicer attached to the table in the cabin. Many of us grew up with a hand- cranked grinder . . . but how many remember a slicer? Ingenious! One childhood memory of our old grinder: Mom always screwed the heavy grinder to the breadboard, pulled out from the kitchen cupboard. As we kids pushed and pulled the crank, urging chunks of leftover roast beef through the channel, the breadboard made its slow journey in toward the counter and sooner or later—whack—went our knuckles! That was one job we soon learned not to fi ght for! If you haven't taken a trip down memory lane or had your dose of history lately, stop by the Bouse Museum. Take a look around. Talk to Hosts Charlie and Dorothy. They'll do their best to show you around, answer your questions, and provide you with a memorable experience. There's a picnic table on the grounds, if you want to bring your lunch. Coming up on Saturday, Feb 13, our 25th An- nual Camp Bouse Dedication Ceremony will be held at the Tank Memorial on Hwy 72 at Main St. at 10:20am to honor all veterans. Special Guest Speakers are La Paz County Sheriff William Ponce, and Colonel Ben "Patrick" McFall, Com- mander of the Yuma Proving Ground- which by the way is the only existing active U.S Army Base of the original 13 Desert Training Camps of WWII. On Feb. 14, A Breakfast and Tour of Camp Bouse will begin at 8am, then caravan to the camp, returning around 2pm. Number of vehi- cles is limited, so please call 928-851-2509 for more info and to make your reservation. Bring your beverages and lunch or snacks, we'll return around 2.
