BY JAY BOBBIN Mel Gibson was known largely for the original "Mad Max" movie when he starred in "The Year of Living Dangerously," director and co-screenwriter Peter Weir's superbly atmospheric 1982 drama that Turner Classic Movies uses to launch a month-long series of journalism- themed films Friday, Feb. 5. Gibson plays an Australian reporter covering the mid- 1960s unrest in Jakarta, and becoming involved with a British embassy worker (Sigourney Weaver). Without a doubt, the standout performance is by later "NCIS: Los Angeles" regular Linda Hunt, who won an Oscar by playing a different gender as Gibson's self-appointed information source and general helper amidst all of the tumult. For a picture that's almost 40 years old, this has managed to stay remarkably fresh despite its being set in an era that reaches back even farther than that.
