Indoor building Have fun building castles, homes, construction sites, and forts with anything available. You can use building blocks, empty cardboard or plastic containers, toilet tissue and paper towel cardboard tubes. You can also build a fort with boxes, blankets, and pillows. Or, build a domino run. Set up dominoes by standing them on end in long lines so that when the first tile topples, it topples the second, which topples the third, then the fourth, until all of the tiles fall. Begin with just few dominos and increase the number and difficulty of the design as you go. Hey kids! It's winter and you might be staying home more, seeing your friends less and not playing outside as much. But there are lots of cool ways to have fun at home with your family. Why don't you become the head of your family's entertainment committee? You can dream up new ideas for indoor fun, and invite other family members to join in. Board games, video games, movies, and other activities are great ways to get your family together and keep from getting bored yourself. It's also a good way to practice taking turns, being a good sport and teamwork. Here are some ideas: themed movie night Decide on one night each week that will be family movie night. The twist is that each week the movie selection must fit a particular theme chosen randomly from a jar. Write down themes on pieces of paper, like animal, adventure, comedy, animated, musical, holiday, fairy tales, outer space, super hero, movies based on books, kids choice, parents choice, to help you select the movie. For example, if "animal" is selected, then the movie must be about animals or have an animal as a main character or part of the film. A theme helps add some variety to the movie selections. Everyone can wear pajamas and you can pop some popcorn and even make and "sell" tickets to your family movie night. Board game night Chances are you have a closet or drawer at home filled with various games. Many of them such as Monopoly®, Scrabble®, Clue® or Yahtzee® have been around a long time. You might also choose to play a family card game. Everyone can take turns choosing their favorite game, or even teaching other family members a game that they don't know about. A family game night is a great way to have fun and improve your strategies and skills. action game night If you're in the mood to move, look for games that involve action and give all family members a chance to win. Action games combine a physical activity and family interaction. They can be formal games with rules, or freestyle games that the family creates. Relay races, timed scavenger hunts, hide and seek, indoor bowling, obstacle courses or physical games like Twister® are some ideas. If there are enough people in your home, you also can divide up into two groups and engage in a game of charades. Or play freeze dance: one person chooses their favorite music and has everyone dance until the music stops, at which point they all must freeze. For extra fun, have people freeze in a certain shape when the music stops. Some good choices are the shapes of: animals, letters, plants (trees or flowers), emotions, yoga positions. Rotate the person who gets to choose, play and stop the music. artsy fun Choose the oldest or youngest in the family to start this drawing game and then have players draw in order of their birth date. Start with a fairly large piece of paper and get out colored pencils, crayons, or markers. The first player begins by drawing a line, circle, or other piece of a picture. Each player adds to it. Keep having players add to the picture until everyone has a turn, or until each player has had a certain number of turns. See what kind of interesting "group"drawing you wind up with! puzzle or trivia night Put your brain to the test! For a real challenge, set up a table with a large (1000-piece) jigsaw puzzle that the whole family can work on together. It's fun to figure out where pieces fit into the big picture. Or play a family trivia game, with questions about your own family members. Examples: Who is mom's favorite actress? What does dad like to do best on his day off ? How many pairs of socks does sissy have in her sock drawer? Who is brother's favorite super hero? F a m il y F u n N ig h t !
