27 MAKER'S 46: Kentucky Bourbon Whisky In 2010, Maker's Mark introduced Maker's 46, the first new product to come from its distillery since the whisky debuted in 1958. Created using an inventive stave-finishing process, Maker's 46 is a bolder, more complex whisky that still retains the delicious drinkability of Maker's Mark. Maker's 46 begins with a foundation of fully matured Maker's Mark, which is made using soft red winter wheat (versus the traditional rye) for a bourbon that finishes on the front of the palate. Once fully matured, the bourbon is removed from its American oak barrel and ten seared French oak staves are affixed to the inside. The bourbon is then returned to the barrel where it finishes for several additional months, extracting the perfect balance of caramel, vanilla, oak, and spice flavors from the seared wood staves. When it tastes exactly right, Maker's 46 is removed from the barrel, bottled at 94 proof and hand-dipped in signature red wax. Though bolder than the original, Maker's 46 is still soft enough to hold on the tongue even at 94 proof. With a deep, rich copper tone, the whisky has a generous and pleasant nose with hints of sweetness and oak. Its rich, creamy flavor, meanwhile, dramatically builds on the wood notes before finishing perfectly with deep, lingering touches of vanilla and caramel. Maker's 46 delivers a long, mouthwatering oaky finish unlike any other that begins on the back of the tongue and continually moves forward. The bold flavors of Maker's 46 make it a sophisticated sipping bourbon meant to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks—or, of course, paired effortlessly with a delicious meal.
