The brand's name is also a clear nod to the capital city's famed 1970s music venue Armadillo World Headquarters, known as "the birthplace of Austin's eclectic communal culture," according to Sean Foley, co-founder and CEO of Nine Banded. "The Armadillo brought together hippies, rednecks, and cosmic cowboys around a shared love of great music and good times." Though it closed in 1980, its influence can be seen in the vibrant, diverse, and inclusive music scene that Nine Banded Whiskey draws its inspiration from today, says Foley, who calls the brand "Austin culture in a bottle." The brand has two expressions, both blends of hand-selected whiskeys that see the addition of limestone-filtered water from Nine Banded's private spring in the Texas Hill Country. With its rich and round mouthfeel, the golden honey–hued Wheated Bourbon is best served neat or on a rock. The Straight Bourbon Whiskey, meanwhile, is crafted with versatility in mind, offering a spice-forward profile and a salted-caramel finish —try it in the Amaro Old Fashioned (recipe on the right).
