By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Three girls will be competing Thursday for the title of Corning Junior Rodeo Queen, won in 2012 by Corning Union High School student Kaylee Loewen of Gerber. Codi Baer, 13, of Cottonwood, Kelsey Kruse, 18, of Red Bluff and Michell Woolbert, 15, of Los Molinos will compete at the pre-rodeo Mixer, which starts at 6 p.m. at Estil C. Clark Park. Codi, the daughter of Pam and Michael Baer, is a seventh grade student at Cottonwood Creek Charter School. She will be riding a quarter horse named Bippy. Her favorite horse events are jumping, because it's exciting, and reining because of the speed and agility required. Codi has a passion for writing and hopes one day to get one of her books published, she said. Her goal is to go to college and get a scholarship. She would love to represent rodeo because of what it means to her and her family and would some day like to own her own equestrian center and train horses full time, Codi said. Kelsey, the daughter of Kass Kruse, is a junior at Red Bluff Union High School. She rides a mustang named Modoc also known as Doc. Her interest include her horse and training it, being with her friends and teaching others how to ride. Future plans include going to Butte College or Cal Poly. Kelsey would like to be a Fish and Game warden, she said. She wants to be queen because she would like to be a role model for others, Kelsey said. Michell, the daughter of Hope and Berry Woolbert, is a freshman at Red Bluff High School. She will be riding a quarter horse named Wilde Josey Flow. Michell loves pole bending because of the challenge in becoming one with the horse and in staying clear of the poles. She loves to ride bulls and enjoys the thrill of the gate opening and the first jump of the bull, Michell said. She also enjoys basketball and track and her family and friends. Michell plans to attend a four-year college and would like to participate on a college rodeo team before transferring to a veterinary school to become a licensed vet. She would like to be rodeo queen to be a good role model for younger See RODEO, page 7A The name of a 19-yearold Red Bluff man who died as a result of a motorcycle crash on Plymire Road, east of Mendenhall Road, has been released by the Shasta County Coroner's office as Skylar Garcia. While the crash took place in Tehama County, the death occurred at a hospital in Redding, a Tehama County Coroner's spokeswoman said. Garcia was discovered sometime Saturday evening and he was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding where he died of his injuries, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. Garcia had been riding west on Plymire Road at a high rate of speed when he entered and failed to negotiate a right curve, losing control of the 2009 Honda motorcycle. The motorcycle landed on its side before running off the road. Garcia was thrown from the motorcycle, the spokesman said. The motorcycle hit a road sign before hitting an embankment and overturning. The incident is still under investigation and alcohol is being investigated as a possible cause, the spokesman said. The crash was one of three fatal incidents to take place over the weekend. Police were sent about 7 p.m. Saturday to a home on Homestead Drive for reports of a man down and found a 29-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive in the garage. CPR was initiated and first responders were able to gain a heartbeat, but the man was later pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Community Hospital.
